You know the fireplace clocks that ring every 15 minutes. I wonder why this is needed. Was this fashionable for a while?

Her 15 dakikada bir çalan şömine saatlerini bilirsiniz. Buna neden ihtiyaç duyulduğunu merak ediyorum. Bu bir süre moda mıydı?

Hi Cihan,

My understanding is that it comes from a time when the mantel clock was the only timepiece in the home. The quarter-strikes, each getting progressively longer, meant that even if you were not in the room, you would still know what the time was (and whether you were late for work!).

I'm sure there are other suggestions though.

As early as the eighth century, Christian churches used chiming clocks to mark key hours and important services for communities. That is the main reason.
