Technical question: Rotation of winding pinion in automatic movements

Recommended Posts

In automatic watches, the ratchet wheel on the barrel is always being wound by the automatic works when the wearer moves. Does this mean that the winding pinion in the keyless works is also always rotating (via the crown wheel) according to how much movement the wearer does?

I have just tried rotating the weight on an ETA 2824. The ratchet wheel turns the crown wheel, but there is some lateral movement in the crown wheel, which stops it turning the winding pinion.

Other movements I'm not sure, but I don't think so. Can't remember seeing any turn the winding pinion when I've being testing them.
