Rotary 9ct Gold Case Repair

Hi all!

I've came across this lovely Rotary watch which has a 9ct gold 2-piece case. The problem is that a glass cannot be fitted to the casing as it has been squashed slightly or distorted and it is now uneven and will not allow a glass to be fitted.

Does anyone know of a reputable watch casing specialist/goldsmith? I know that this type of repair is pretty specialist as I've taken it to many goldsmiths who have told me that I need somebody who works with watch cases specifically as you need some sort of knowledge of how the casing is supposed to be...

I have tried contacting a few, including Adam Phillips at watchcaseworks.co.uk and classicwatchrepair.com but am not getting any responses?

Any advice would be fantastic. I've even checked eBay to see if I could pick up another similar Rotary to use the casing but it's a bit risky since it's 9ct gold and only a 2 piece case where most are 3 piece cases with the bezel containing the glass...

I have a Longines 9ct gold case with similar damage. The only person I found was Adam Phillips - he sounded ideal.

I sent him the watch in June and I haven't been able to contact him since July.

I'm getting a bit worried as it was a good watch.

Oh bless you. I have used Adam Phillips in the past for an 18ct fold Omega case that needed melting down and starting again. He did a fantastic job in fairness and in around 4 weeks if I remember correctly. The total charge was in the region of £900-1000 which is very pricey but its clearly a very skilled job and hes the only person that I could find so I guess he can name his price which could be very reasonable but I have no bearing for comparison...

Ive now sent the Rotary to a gentleman named Brendan Hoey at webwatchmaker.com who seems spot on. His website is very informative and his CV is impressive as are his examples and reviews so fingers crossed he can sort this Rotary casing for me. Ill keep you posted on the progress.

I really hope you are able to get in touch with Adam Phillips and get tour Longines back. Not to perpetuate any false stories or anything but when I was having my Omega casing done with Adam (a little over a year ago) I had to do a little bit of chasing after payment to get the watch posted. I spoke with his wife who mentioned he had a bout of ill health so I really hope that hes ok. But, as I say, that is just speculation...

Best of luck

    • As Richard said, this is a really old school trick for joinery.  Cut i strip of paper, might need to be watch paper  around 1 " x 1/2" lay it over a staking block then press the stud screw into and through the edge of the paper upto the head of the screw. You probably wont even need to pull the paper away the head will pull itself through.
    • Thanks Jon, my mum is getting there day by day, so strong and determined, they dont make em like this anymore 🙂 Old folk are so amazing,  my mum used to love her golf, she didn't stop playing until she was 70 . Enjoy your trip and your golf.
    • Hello,  i am looking to source a winding stem (winding arbor) for a waltham 6/0 d movement. I have found some that claim to fit 6/0, 6/0s, 6/0b etc and somealso claim they will also fit the d as well. The d does have hacking which is driven by the stem seating completely. Given some of the costs of these, i was hoping someone would know of any interchangeability with a source, or know a source where a confirmed 6/0 d stem can be had. I am in the US so a US dealer is best.    thanks in advance.
    • So great to see and hear- your mum looks great! …my mil had a stroke last summer in the golf course parking lot. I’m flying out tomorrow to visit and play golf. she’s ornery because she can’t get off the tee but I hear she makes up for it on the greens since she’s been putting since a week after her stroke 🧐…
    • Very best wishes to you and your family, as a carer myself I know how difficult things can be.
