Before you start desoldering anything I'd try a decent Silver Oxide battery. What does the other side of the circuit board look like.

Oh that's interesting - I'd read these were really tricky to service with damage prior to the gasket stuffing discovery, but that sounds fairly straightforward... I guess I have a fall back option, cheers!

Thanks for the timing app suggestion. Still need to figure out how to use it properly, but face up Slava shows +5 sec/day and Ingersoll is -130 sec/day. I am guessing that tiny ultrasonic baths are no good for cleaning watch parts? Link to a £5 jobbie For UK specifically, what are our options for re-plating cases, restoring dials and buying replacement glass? Esp for cases, are there any friendly businesses that do a good price for replating a watch? Say, you can get quoted £450 for professional respray of a steel bike frame, but if you know the right guy in the industry, you can get it done for £90. Plenty of Ingersolls around, true.

Crystal tool came in today, so I gave it a go on the Benrus. Got the movement out and give it a naptha cleaning and was able to spin it up. So that is some progress. But Im not getting a pulse reading, and no movement when reassembled with the battery. Because of the unusual movement Im not sure what to try next. Do I unsolder that huge Motorola crystal and replace with "a modern tiny 32.768Hz tube". The linked site shows that as a common issue. I am a bit concerned with my solder skills on something this size and delicate.

I've just got a piece of tube I place over the stem and hit to deform the washer until it comes out. I then flatten the washer so it's almost flat, replace the gasket, press the washer back with a slightly larger tube to finish flattening it.
