Busy cleaning up an old Vertex 1940's watch. I can't work out if the crystal is held in by a bezel or if it just pops out. It appears that there has been at least one attempt in the past to remove it judging by the gouge marks. There does appear to be a gap around the bezel but before I butcher the case I though I'd ask.

It does look like a bezel. In such cases I use a fine blade, worked all the way round, to try to get some movement. I use window scraper blades like this

Thanks Mike. I did try a stanley blade, but will see if I've got anything finer.

I've removed most of the gunge from the case but might give it a wash to see if it frees it up a little.

It's a small case, around 28mm excluding the crown, so will go gently.
