The stud has a neck that is a little smaller in diameter than the end and the hole is keyhole shaped so the stud locks in and I wouldn't need to worry about the thickness of the tail pulling it out of the hole. It might be possible to remove the stud from the existing spring, but I don't know how I'd go about doing that in such a way that it would be reusable. Maybe work around it squeezing with pliers until the riveted end became small enough to pass through the spring? A few more higher magnification pics of the pin/stud:

What's the movement? The fact it lifts up would make me think it's the wheel that's worn as the screw should set the maximum height. Can you post photos showing both sides of the wheel.

Nothing obvious I can see, I'll take a better look today. I thought so too, I thought maybe a button to remove the crown but not that either. The mystery continues... -
Thanks I just bought some for about $17 shipped from China. Then realized the next listing could ship from the USA instead. Here's hoping they don't ask me for another $30 when mine arrive.

Hi, Would anybody be able to offer some insight as to a possible solution here? When I first opened this watch a while back I thought it was just the end of the ridge and the 'chrome' that had worn away, but taking a look today I see it's worn away the brass to a reasonable extent. Torque comes on the crown wheel, it lifts up and separates from the winding pinion. Is this just a case of replace the mainplate if I want to keep the watch? All the best, John
