Everyone,

I'm working on an ETA 2472. Everything has gone well so far. However (there's always a however), when I install the balance it starts up just fine. When I tighten down the screws to snug, it continues to run. When I tighten the screws, the balance stops dead. The upper jewel is an Incabloc setting held in place by a u-clip on the underside of the balance cock. The lower jewel is an Incabloc setting held in place by a screw. I'm pretty sure the balance staff is straight and has no issues.

So, I need some advice:

1. Do I live with the screws in the snug position and hope they don't back out?

2. Try to install a shim in between the main plate and the balance cock. I used a dial washer on another watch for a similar problem and it worked.

3. Adjust the height of the jewels within the Incabloc settings. If so, how does one do this? I do have a Horia tool.

Thanks,

MikeCJ

    • You need as a minimum what's called hand levers to remove them and a hand press of some sort to refit them. So the first thing to confirm is if the HQ505.6L is correct. Does yours have a date at the 6 o'clock position, any photos would help.
    • Don't know of any watch repair shops, but HS Walsh have a shop in Hatton Garden. When in the West End I usually walk down New Bond Street, ogling in the windows at the very expensive watches 🤪 Also, if you haven't already been, the Science Museum now houses the collection from the "Worshipful Company of Clockmakers". Watches from 1600 to present. Some of those from the 1600s are incredible. Well worth a visit.
    • Thanks for the info JM! After looking at the stem, I don't think there is metal loss so I might just be in luck 🙂 In case I do need a new Stem crown, who is your mystical source if I can ask?
    • Thanks for the explanation @JohnR725. I had seen images like this before, but they didn’t quite make sense. Now I get it. It’s good that I removed the jewels for cleaning, I think, since that probably hadn’t been done for a very long time. With that said, my oiling probably wasn’t effective. I can add a drop and use my oil balance staff to get it to bleed down.
    • Thanks, The replacement seems pretty simple. Do I need to buy any special tools to remove and replace the hands? Also as far as the variations I need some help here. I measured the height and it was 6mm with the second hand on it. The 2 505 movements that are the tallest are 5.4mm and 5.3mm. I found a website that says that Luminox used a HQ505.6L movement that is 5.3mm. Cost $20. So do I need to buy any special tools to deal with the hands?
