Chalet gold watch

Recommended Posts

Hi peeps. How you all doin. So picked this up yesterday at a car boot along with 30 or so other watches, proportionally valued at under a quid.  It was at the of  bottom of the of the pile looking very sad for itself. I've no idea what to do with it. It wants to run, but the dial is looking very tired. After further investigation it is 14k solid gold, the remaining jewels have been suggested elsewhere as rubies and diamonds but I'm very skeptical as to that. I've no knowledge that can help me identify them either. Its gold scrap value is coming out at nearly 150 quid. I'd hate to break down a vintage watch unnecessarily it goes against my grain, Its restored value is possibly quite a bit more, but the replacement jewels to make it saleable are going to be more than it finished value thats even if i could aquire them . I really dont know what to do with it 🤷‍♂️

See if the jewels scratch glass. Also look at them through a loupe, there should be imperfections.

Just had another thought, you can get a diamond tester for under a tenner on Amazon. Bonus, you can use it to confirm a crystal is actually sapphire. Bonus number 2, you get to add another tool to the collection. 😂

There are 2 reds missing and 2 clear . If they are diamond and ruby but an educated guess tells me very unlikely that they are. Getting the gems cut and attached is going to be expensive. I've seen similar with green gems pricing at around 500, another seller with the same watch was quoting diamonds but i think that is bs tbh. I hate to break it down but i cant ever see it being wearable unless i can restore the dial with the same gems. If anyone is willing offer advice i will go with the majority, or if anyone can point me in the right direction of where to get a cheap gem choice that would be even better. Movement picture here if that sways any ideas. Dial is pretty beat up.
