My usual method of pre-cleaning is to use peg wood to 'peg the jewels' then once this has removed/dislodged the gunk use a pointy type cotton bud dipped in IPA to clean the jewels and larger watch items. However, this weekend I was trying to remove that awful graphite grease (or at least I think it was) and the IPA was having a tough time lifting it. I switched to naphtha (lighter fluid) and the gunk was gone in a second. I am now questioning my use of IPA, why don't I switch to naphtha as my follow up cleaning solvent after pegging? Thoughts?

Greetings everyone, I have a quick question. I'm having problems getting hold of 99.9% IPA - the joys of living where I do. Strangely, I can get 99.9% ethanol. Could I substitute ethanol for IPA in my normal watch cleaning activities? I know its a little more reactive with shellac (or so I read - please feel free to correct me if I am wrong), but I wouldn't intentionally use IPA anywhere around shellac anyway. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I could not fint any answer to this on any other thread. Im using Isopropyl alcohol for the last step of hand cleaning movements. However i can not find a good way to throw used liquid away. How do you do it, I know that the liquid will turn into gas eventually however since i fill a small jar there is always going to come times when i need to throw it away. Where do i throw it? How do you do it? Thanks in advance, Jakob
