I've been practicing with my newly purchased staking/jeweling set.  I have successfully removed and re-installed the center wheel jewel on a cheap Chinese movement.  It is kinda exhilarating feeling when the jewel is pushed into place!!

Anyway, the center wheel jewel is easy to do because the main plate balances on the stump.  I have not yet done one of the other jewels on the main plate because I want to confirm something before I do (I am sure it is a silly question, and believe the answer is self evident but want to confirm before proceeding).

When doing a jewel that is not in the center of the main place, I assume I will need to hold the movement in place with my fingers until the stake rest on the jewel.  The problem that it is very fiddly to hold the movement with the hand.  Is there a better way of making sure the movement does not move until the stake holds it in place?  Am I missing somenthing?

thank you

I have another question.  I have removed and re-installed the lower chaton in the same movement (I had broken off the spring in an earlier attempt to remove it before realizing it could not be removed).

However when inspecting the results, I saw this filing between the chaton and the main plate.  Is this normal or did I do something wrong to cause it?
