Seth Thomas Alarm clock

So I sniped this Seth Thomas Alarm clock for day cheaper than I could ever imagine. The only problem was faulty shipping... The glass broke, plus the original paint is peeling off like a horrible sunburn.

I must say it's my first clock purchase and I love it. It's jewelled, probably mass produced, but it keeps perfect time... Seller said it was broke but the only problem is the alarm won't work. When I turn it now it won't click, the first time it did but when the alarm came to strike it just unwound and did nothing.

Now it just won't wind up period. I did figure out how to work the alarm before you ask that.... So I'm not sure what is wrong I took it apart which was easy enough... Putting it back in it's case is another story completely. So any ideas?7494abe9c2fdd7db7e15c97a9f1cfdd1.jpgec8877ee14e771edd044122a35443458.jpg69732c08c137e0f791290fb99ae50bd7.jpgcdada1a7b1429cc084246413ea5930ce.jpg45dcc9495e30dd2e800d7be950ef935e.jpg

It could do in a pinch if it fits, but you really want something with a thicker handle, as you want to let it spin slowly in your hand to let down the spring and a pin vice may be hard to hold to let it spin slowly in your hand.

The safest way is screw the key on and let it down by hand, by releasing the click in stages. That way it won’t slip.  Using a pin vice could be a problem if it tends to slacken off you will have no control and damage might happen.

Alarm work on this movement is the same as most on these small movements. It works like this. The alarm spring has power.

Black arrow part is held by red arrow part. When blue arrow wheel drops into the green arrow groove the red arrow part moves away from black arrow part allowing the alarm to work. I have shown the part that drops into place by yellow arrow.

Do I had trouble removing the hands but got em. I took it apart cleaned it and... I screwed the hair spring up somehow! Where can I get one? I've tried searching but am unsure what it is I should search for. Oh I'm just up to my ears in crap I need to find and get. But it seems like it's something wrong with the Barrell or the star wheel/ striking train. It doesn't want to wind or something like that. Not sure

You will need the cal number for any of the parts. Are you sure you haven't mixed the barrels, arbors, clicks or any of the winding up parts. There is no strike train. What you have is an alarm works which consists of barrel, star looking wheel and hammer.

    • in general this shouldn't be any change. but in general questions like this it be nice to know the specifics of the watch in other words how was it performing before it was cased up and what is it doing now.
    • just as a reminder this watch is a Swatch group product. This will bring up a problem like spare parts and technical information. that I found some links to some information on when I talk about your watch and some of the technical and basically your watch is equivalent to 2834-2 for which I'm attaching the technical sheets. But equivalent does not mean exactly the same you want to do a search on the group for C07 as we discussed this watch before including the technical differences how it's supposed to be regulated and basically because it's watch group there is no parts availability. https://calibercorner.com/eta-caliber-c07-xxx/   https://www.chrono24.com/magazine/eta-movements-from-the-2824-2-to-the-powermatic-80-p_80840/ https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/h-10-movement-details.4636991/ eta CT_2834-2_FDE_481857_15.pdf
    • people be honest.... Swatch is evil for the watchmakers and repairers, BUT not everything in watches from Switzerland is from the Swatch-Group. As far as i know, Selitta got sacked by Swatch as a Movement-Assembler for them and they started to produce Movements in their own Name with slight Modifications. As far as i know, they sell Parts to the Market for their Movements. In most cases, if a ETA-Movement fails, it is a valid Option to replace it with a Selitta Movement, which i consider the Solution for this Mess with the Swatch-Group...... I have no Connection to anybody at Selitta, but being a Swiss-Guy, i still like to have Swiss-Made Watches, but not from the Swatch-Group.   ok ? regards, Ernst
    • Just one more greedy act by Swatch. They started a number of years ago here in the US..cutting off supplies to watchmakers that could build complications that many Swatch houses couldn't even touch. Old school masters who had gone through some of the most prestigious houses in the world. Otto Frei has some statements on their page about it. I tell all my customers to avoid new Swiss watches like the plague,..unless they just want an older one in their collection that still has some parts out on the market, or they have really deep pockets and don't mind waiting months and paying through the nose to get it back. Plenty of others to choose from..IE Seiko,..or other non-swiss brands Even a number of Chinese brands are catching up with the Swiss,..and I think that in time, their actions will be their downfall
    • Yes. If that's not what you are experiencing...start looking for something rubbing. A 1st guess is that one of the hands is rubbing against the hole in the center of the dial. Especially if you now have lower amplitude in face up/ face down positions.
