Oooops I did it again

Well once again my local online market place had another clock that caught my eye, it measures 45cm x 35cm and is slate and possibly marble, it’s got an Ansonia chiming movement installed. Closer inspection shows some knocks  and some kind of painted repair marks.

the movement looks like is has had a WD40 spray so a full strip etc to come, the brocok type escapement ( think that’s what it is called ) needs repair as can be seen in the photos, this I can see is going to be abit of a project

Its a nice looking clock but wow those Brocot pallets have been butchered and are going to need major work ! good luck

All of the Ansonia's I have worked on have needed re-bushing. Looking at your pics this is another re-bushing project. I suspect the material used with these movements was  poor compared to the French movements.

It is a strike movement. Parts are available for these type of clocks. The composition of the plates are quite soft so wear is a big thing, the biggest fault with these American clocks are the springs and they are so strong they force the movement to work. The steel is also soft. Looks like a chimpanzee has had a go at the pallets.  

About the springs, you can buy clamps for these springs. Do not try to assemble the movement with the springs unwound you will have a wrestling match on your hands.

 

Tip

Clocks with one key hole = Timepiece

Clocks with two key holes = Strike

Clocks with three key holes = Chime

There are exceptions.

Thanks for the tips, especially about the springs, as for the pallets, i know someone else here had some made of made them for their project, I might bite the bullet and buy a scrapper movement for spares aswell as trying make some myself.

im hunting a site called antique Ansonia clocks, but so far haven’t found mine, does anyone know what the name/cal this movement is please?

I thought the pallets pins were held in with shellac, looks like tar, probably a bit of extra weight to slow the clock down a tad lol....The slate will clean up OK.

Definitely thinking I’m going to need a scrapper movement to get this one sorted though, I’ll have a go at the rebushing etc, only done it once under supervision so I’ll see how that goes.
