hairspring location after removal

Recommended Posts

Is there a 'golden rule' relating to relocating a hairspring onto a balance staff with regards to getting zero beat error after it has been removed for attention.  I usually take pics or use marker pen but sometime forget!

You should always note the position of the hairspring on the balance. This saves you time, setting it in beat, when it comes to putting it back together. It will become automatic to you with practise.

Observe the fork as you turn the balance wheel manualy, you will see the fork move as impulse jewel enters the horn of the fork and will notice as it leave the fork. I  use a pencil to mark the balance wheel in reference with some fixed point like the fixed stud holder or the fork bridgd screw. You know at this postion of the balance wheel the impulse jewel is inside the fork horn.

If a moble stud holder, bring it to middls of the interval of its span.

Remove the balance wheel, mount the HS so the stud is right on top of stud hole.

Rinse, ready to instal.

This will work even if the roller has been moved.or the HS has been shortened etc.

You would need to regulate on machine for zero beat.
