Calibre

Dumb newbe question.

Calibre - what exactly is meant by this with regard to watches? It's probably so obvious that no one bothers to say what it is, but I can't work it out :$

Cousins need it for their search, but the pocketwatch database dosesn't quote it.

e.g. this elgin movement - which of these values is it's "calibre"?

Isn't that the 414 that is the calibre or grade as Elgin call it? At least i foiund Elgin 414 on ranfft .

Is it? That's the thing - no one actually says "calibre is also called grade".

This one is giving me mainspring hell.

So i just thought as there where 414 there it was a 414. Looked in my Prima book and can't find any info about the 414 mainspring. The olnly thing i can find is the numbers that ranfft has.

I don't recall this question getting a full answer, and I think it deserves one.

I seem to recall seeing "calibre" and "movement" being used interchangeably.  Can anyone tell the class the origin of the word "calibre" in regards to watchmaking, and how we as students should correctly use the term?
