Horological spill over into other hobbies?

Well among my other interests, motorcycles probably rank as high as horology and recently I had occasion to use some horological knowledge on my bike.

Problem was the sight glass for the 2-stroke oil was well knackered

It looked like it had been subjected to heat at some point.

I managed to source a replacement but the closest I could find was a similar diameter but with different height.

and when installed it sat a few mm lower (in the pic below the window should sit flush with the surround).

Well I measured the diameter and found it was 28mm. I pulled out a 282 crystal and inserted it using the claw.

a few taps and its now flush. Here it is in place with the outer cover in position.

Its not as clear as a correct original would be and your eyes need to be exactly level with the window when checking but it will do for an occasional bike which doesn't see much use.

another aspect of watchmaking was this caseback opener which I attempted to use to remove the locking ring.. unsuccessfully. This was eventually removed by the trusty hammer and screwdriver.

Anyone else used watch skills/tools on other hobbies?

Well it is not a tool but a cleaning fluid. It is a concentrated ultrasonic cleaner (7:1 mix with warm water) for clocks but is also for cleaning carburettors.  It is on order I will review when I have used it. Thinking about it, it  is to remove old grease & oils etc so it should work & at £27.90 for 5 litres incl. delivery  I thought it is was worth a punt.  I purchased today from :

I have used my ultrasonic carb cleaner at the shop to clean stubborn stainless cases, but I didn't want to tell anybody :huh: 

As long as its good stainless it doesnt hurt anything. Carb cleaner is pretty strong stuff. Have also used CLR in my jewelry ultrasonic for stubborn rust on stainless cases. Be careful though...

What would I be asking for if I went to a music supplies shop... I seem to remember they were called by alphabets..eg e-string?

yes, sort of ended up the way.  I do reflect though that I had just as much when starting, collecting and often reconditioning all the stuff is a pursuit of its own, but you don't have to have to make great stuff or have a ball doing so.   JD, I don't have much money into; its like that cliche, you want it high quality, fast and low price pick two.  Patience over the decades, bit of buying and selling and upgrading and so on. 

I see lots of overlap with horology and machining, many model engineering types also make clocks for example..... but also there tons  and tons of new learning and new skills required....so with shops stuffed full of tools, its blast being a beginner again :)

cripes that response was illegible....apologies, I miss words when I type,  mild dyslexia and this site doesn't let one go back and fix things  :(.   It should have read  " yes, it sort of ended up that way.  I do reflect though that I had just as much fun when starting out.  Collecting and often reconditioning all the stuff is a pursuit of its own, but you don't have to have so much to make great stuff or have a ball doing so.

      Thanks for the help guys! VWatchie I already found your thread but I'll check it again. Nice to know about acetone, I still have to get the shellac off since I made a little mess. I adjusted the jewel, put new shellac (the so called soldering technique, pallet tool too hot this time so the shellac "wire" melted in air before getting in contact with jewels or fork) rinsed the pallet fork and put it back dry. Amplitude is now in the 240-250 range that I expected in the first place. I guess there's enough oil in the escape wheel teeth already but I'll check that later. The mainspring was pretty beaten so a new one would probably boost the amplitude even further. Nice to learn new things. Now I have another thing to look for while disassembling. I wonder if the watch left the factory that way.

      These are all American movements (with the exception of the "Rubis"), and are all almost certainly "negative set" which means the stem is part of the case. So it's normal that they are all missing- they are with their cases. You will need male square bench keys to wind/disarm them. Vintagewatchstraps has a great writeup on the different systems. But basically, any American "x" size movement will fit any case for that size, possibly with some adjusting of the stem position. With Swiss movements, there is some interchangeability between calibers, usually within the same maker's range, but not really overall- there are thousands of different stems out there.

      Hi, I'm very new to watchmaking and this is my first time posting here.  I've bought a lot of 10 vintage pocket watches size 0s from e-bay and just got them today.  Most of the balance wheels sprung quite freely and thus seemed like a worthy endeavor as a first batch for exploration.  I've just realized that none of them have any winding stems. Is there any way I could source appropriate winding stems for the movements? There seems to be assortments of various stems selling in bulk on aliexpress, but would any of them fit?  I've read on other threads that some people lathe their own stems (which is waaaay out of my current skill set, which is pretty much nil). Others say that you 'just have to try a few and see if they fit'. I would much appreciate any advice for this matter. Thanks!

      Nice work.  In the last year, I have been servicing Accutron 218s.  I have the official Accutron hoder that provides electrical contact to the movement.  It is a pretty clever design.  There is a cut in the ring of the holder (shaped like a "C").  When in relaxed state, the holder is slightly smaller than the watch movement.  You spread the cut slightly and drop the movement in and release.  Very clean.  I have made 3D versions of this setup.  Have not explored using it generally for other movements.
