Hi all

Fore years now I have been putting watch parts in a plastic bag after cleaning when demagnetising, just wondering weather i would get the same results if I left them in the little baskets what do you think.

cheers kaz

ps it’s a Elma antimag demagnetiser

I would think you would, as long as the basket is of a non-magnetic material (which I suspect most are). My basket is a soft metal, probably a mix of aluminum and or tin, but definitely non-ferrous.

I put my small parts in a small plastic container with a lid, about the size of a bottle cap, and it works fine.

I always demagnetised the complete movement before taking it apart. Make sure your tweezers, screwdrivers oilers and the cleaning machine basket are as well. If you do this and get into the habit, it will save you a lot of time.

Forget the screwdrivers if you have anti magnetic ones.

So doing them in the baskets would have the same results then, I guess there is only way to find out is to try it.

Ok a little update on this, last night at the Milton Keynes BHI meeting I asked the same question, once the movement has been cleaned and assembled you put the movement on the demagnetiser dial down press the button, turn it over dial up press the button then turn it 90 deg then press the button again that’s it, if you keep trying to do this it can re magnetise the movement, this is for the ELMA ANTIMAG only there was 6 people in the conversation and they all agreed.

Cheers Kaz

One of the many sacrifices they demand of watch repairers. Can you imagine all the steampunk art they have created over the years? :D
