tissot 27B-21 movement

Recommended Posts

HI all, I've gone from being a lover of vintage watches to a tinkerer. I started on  Seiko 7S26 movement, disassembling and now reassembling.  I bought a tissot 27B-21 moment, dial ( not in great condition) and crystal very cheaply, thinking i would just use it to learn with, but it's very clean and a nice looking movement, so i wonder if anyone knows of options for using one of these movements as part of a project. obviously not to try to restore to an original Tissot watch, but to find a case and to build a watch from there. I'm very inexperienced with hands on stuff so any advice would be appreciated.

The problem will be alignment of the stem and depth of movement and to a lesser degree , diameter of movement for the replacement case. If the movement is too shallow adjustment can be made with a piece of sprung steel on the shoulder, where the dial sits within the case.
A far more practical solution is to replace the crystal. Remove the dial and measure and seek a generic dial from places such as ebay. The dial can be stuck to the movement with dial spots and is very straightforward, particularly if the watch has no complication

It says tissot & fils, it's similar but you can see the differences, most obviously in the balance wheel which has screws whcih I'm guessing allows for finer adjustments.

thanks for the advice digginstony,  if I understand correctly you're saying that if I replace the crystal and find a generic dial it will be easier to match to a case? I've probably got that completely wrong. cheers

No, use existing case. That way everything will line up. With a new crystal and dial and possibly hands, the watch should look pretty good

the problem is i don't have the case! I got the movement to play with and it came with the crystal and dial already in place only. the problem will be finding a case I guess. I have some information on the dimensions of the movement, but I would need gasket/rings I guess these would come with the case? the seiko has a rubber mount for the movment, would I have to find something similar to match?sorry to be vague but as I said, I'm not experienced.

Now I understand. Most case/movement combinations as advertised cater for modern watch architecture.
Probably your best bet, is to search sites such as ebay, typing in the watch caliber, in the hope something turns up, cased, that fits your movement.
You could buy job lots of old broken vintage watches in the hope a case might fit your movement? But the economics of such a project is questionable.

  • 1 year later...

Rodabod, I have never encountered previously a Lemania 27A movement that is so clearly a forerunner to the Tissot 27B.  Roland Ranfft does not associate the Tissot 27 movements with any Lemania movement.  Is it possible that the movement that you pictured was either originated by Tissot 4 years after Lemania joined SSIH, or at least the movement was used exclusively by Tissot?  I just have not seen the movement in other than a Tissot watch.

Thank you for commenting further if you can.

This was and still is normal in the Swiss watch industry. Someone (sometime isn't even clear who) starts a design, or produces an ebauche which is then transferred, resold, reused, modified, supplied to unexpected third parties as long it makes economical sense. The modifications made can go from fitting a anti-shock that is actually an important innovation, to fitting screws on a flat spring balance to make it look like a free sprung, and of course changing shape, color and finishing of the bridges, in this case they went one step beyond, to fully expose the third wheel it was renounced to have an supper support (not that good technically). All in name of marketing, in order to claim uniqueness and -there you have it- in-house development.

BTW, we have a section here where most consider polite to introduce oneself as a new member.

Give dial OD, I have several cases in SS with matching crown and crystal. These used to house fhf70 which has indirect center second too.

If you like any of these, may be you consider getting me an escape wheel in return.

    • Its 4 o'clock in the morning here in the Uk, i cant sleep, i dont sleep, not much ever really. My brain never shuts off to rest, I'm just a constant thinker, i have to be very tired to be able to sleep,  i guess eventually it will be my undoing and my health will suffer because of it I'm sure. But while I'm here i want to get as much out of life as i can, and give as much as i can, to help, maybe to make a difference to someone's life if that is within my capability, recent events have made that need even more clear to me. I'm not sure where I'm going with this or why i bring it up , or if its relevant to want i want to talk about its just in my head right now. What i do want to talk about is something thats been on my mind for ages. I like to be prepared,  I'm not fond of surprises because surprises take control away and i am a bit of a control freak at times. This forum, Our Forum if i can call it that, is here because of two reasons. The guy that created it and keeps it funded and the people that joined it.  Without either, it would not exist, and lets face it one day it won't ( I'm a realist and i talk about things others dont or who are afraid to in other words folk that dont particularly prepare for the inevitable). How many of us visit here regularly ?  How many among us almost depend on the forum as a way of socialising because they are stuck at home and how many of us has it become part of a daily routine to check in and see if they can offer advice or get help with something they are working on or just to have a chat and engage in some banter. The members here are in the thousands and thousands have disappeared over the years many had just a fleeting visit. But there are a good few of us that know each other quite well and visit regularly. I dont know about you but i wouldnt want to lose that communication with you all, in all honesty it has become an important part of that side of my life and helps to feed my passion for all things watches. Some of you may think differently and thats ok, some of may stop and think # what would i do " Without Our Forum " #
    • Naptha appears to be a general name and its content can be varied depending upon what it's specific use is. Lighter fluid as an example can be light or heavier also with other ingredients to help it burn. Try sesrching for benzine ( as opposed to benzene which is linked to causing health issues ) . There are other fluids such as ethanol that you could try and also methylated sprirts, mostly ethanol with a small percentage of methanol added. Experiment with any new chemical to see how quickly schellac dissolves in its presence. I have tried a few things but hexane is not one of them, i understand it does evaporate very quickly.  Be sure sure to check out any safety data on chemicals you try. Toxicity of fumes and flash point information, ultrasonic machines can heat up fluids even without a heater function. And of course always ask here for personal opinions when trying a new substance.
    • I have that set and really like it. I prefer that crystal holder over the one that came with my Bergeon claw tool and any time I use the claw I use this one instead of the Bergeon one, just an additional bonus with this tool.
    • Is the Roamer not a split stem? I'm confused on your how your case is put together. If it is a front loader where is it you are putting the case screws? I love me some Roamer, do you have any photos?
    • Oh nice. I have a similar wedge style stump for my staking tool, so I'll give that a shot. Thanks!
