1877 Waltham railroad pocket watch sz 18

I have a 1877 Waltham railroad pocket watch sz 18, the watch runs for maybe about 4-5 hours but then stops, so I took it apart and I notice one of the teeth on the ratchet wheel has broken off. Could this be the problem? If so, where can I find a replace part? Everything else inside the watch seems to be ok.

If it broke off its more then likely it got into the movement and it would jam up the works. It should be quite easy to get a replacement as there are loads of replacement parts kicking around. Someone on here might be able to help you out, you could try ebay. Depends where you live, if your in America you stand a good chance of getting a replacement, here in the UK you won't find a watch material suppliers that have them. You will need to clean and oil the movement because taking it apart will disturb old dirt and oil.

When was the last time the watch was serviced? Visually watches can be very deceiving as to the condition. Like for instance it's hard to see the mainspring unless it's removed barrel if the watch hasn't been serviced in a long time it is probably set. TIf the mainspring is set you have no power the watch doesn't run very long and in it hasn't been serviced in a while that's adds to the problem. The little gear tooth floating around not good would probably just stop the watch.

I do live in the US, just having a hard time trying to find a replacement part. Any good ideas on where I should look?

I already taken apart the watch for service, never could find the broken tooth. Must of fallen out while I was taken out the dial.

A search of Ebay would probably turn one up pretty easily. You could look for an 1879 as well. It should have the same winding wheels, perhaps just reversed due to one being an hunter-case, the other open-face. I'm guessing that once you clean the watch, perhaps replacing the mainspring while you're at it, will get you more running hours. I'm taking for granted that the pivots, other wheels, jewels, bushing, etc., are in decent shape. Good luck.

    • I picked up a similar amount of these jewels some years ago in a watch and clock fair. Every now and then they come in handy. This week I've got a rubbed in bombe jewel in the balance cock that is cracked and needs replacing. Very handy to have a vintage assortment of these type of jewels!
    • Great diagram with the teeth and pinion count. Simple way to reduce the speed of the hour wheel by the 12:1 minute wheel. Genius and yet so simple. Always good to reinforce the principal by what you have done in your drawing. Keep doing that. I had a drawing on my wall for years showing me this which is very similar to the drawing you have done. Here's a formula to work out the beats per hour of a watch movement. The movement's BPH is dictated by the wheel teeth and pinion count and the hairspring being vibrated to the correct BPH by finding the pinning up point on the hairspring using a vibrating tool.  The reason in the formula there is X2 on the top line is because there are two pallet stones.
    • So I just wanted to say "thank you" again.  The angle is the key bit it seems and yes, it did basically just fall, or float, back into position when I got it lined up just right. I had meant to add that now that I see how it goes in, I totally see how it came out in the first place, and that whomever cloned the original movement didn't pay much attention to the fine details around the setting or how it interfaces with the balance cock or the "rings" on the regulator and/or stud carrier arms.
    • Well I’ve never seen the make before and cannot find any info, I haven’t got it just yet it’s been left to me among a 1970’s sea master and a mid size yeoman. But if anyone has any information on this one please feel free to enlighten me, many thanks
