New crystal needed

Recommended Posts

Guys I'm after a new crystal for an old astral wrist watch, I've had a hunt through the sternkreuz catalogue but haven't seen a replacement ( might be the wood for the trees syndrome creeping in) .

Anyway it's an acrylic crystal but with an inner lip, I think the photo will explain it better, so any pointers on where I should be looking would be great, cheers guys

Check the Germanow-Simon catalog. I didi a cursory search and saw two that have that stepped lip you need. GS is in New York but if you need something I can contact for you. You'll need the exact diameter and height of crystal.

So that is what GS stands for. Germanow-Simon. You have tiptopcrystals also. That is very good and helpful. He has a lot of crystal that aren't on his page. So send him an Email. http://www.tiptopcrystals.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=PA459

guys apologies for not responding sooner, been abit busy with work,  many thanks for the responses, cousins doesn't have anything like it,  I tried the sternkruez catalogue and found one the same shape but it only come in one size which you've guessed it isn't the same as mine.

I'll try the G'S catalogue and also otto just in case. I have also contacted a smiths specialist here I the UK, they are being very helpful, first email sent late afternoon today and they were still advising me at 20.30hrs so very happy with them.

Wish it did just need a polish mate, it did whilst I was inspecting it, but then the owner had it in her hands and she dropped it!!! So now I need to try and find and replacement, the lathe idea is good but unfortunately I do not possess one to do the job im afraid

Alastair, many thanks for the advice, I can now highly reccomend Charles at watch glass cutting, he has come up trumps with a new crystal for the smiths Astral.

I emailed him and had good comms througout the process, I think I might of been a pain in the butt, but it wasn't my watch and it held huge sentimental value to the owner so I was a little twitchy about sending it away for a new crystal, something I've always done myself but on this occasion was unable to find the part myself, neither were my 3 watchsmiths!!

Anyway I can highly recommended Charles if you need a new crystal cut etc, a fantastic service that if needed I shall use again without hesitation, as I hope others will.

Ah--Yes, Charles is good. He works from home and has all the gear to make glass crystals to any shape, even some sapphire ones, providing the shape isnt too weird...

He's the sort of guy that if he cant do the job exactly like it was, will come up with a good alternative, and will discuss any issues as he goes along...

If you could give the sizes i.e. Overall diameter, depth & size of lip.Maybe I have a spare in my stash. Is the lip inward or facing outward.

Many thanks for the offer clockboy, I have the watch finished now, but I will give you the measurements so you can see if you have any lying around, according to Charles the one he fitted for me was a generic crystal, he must have better eyes than me as I struggled to find one of the correct size

Hi transporter,

This is an old thread, but.. I'm looking for a similar crystal for an Astral watch, and not having much success! Charles, mentioned above, seems not to be around any more and I've had no luck with the various catalogues and specialists.

Any ideas would be very gratefully received..

Many thanks! 🙂

Hi Richard, thanks for that. The inside diameter is approximately 300 (the part which fits inside the bezel), and I suspect it would be 304-306 outside diameter (sitting on the bezel). The case is marked 1714/1. Thanks in advance. 🙂

    • These are all American movements (with the exception of the "Rubis"), and are all almost certainly "negative set" which means the stem is part of the case. So it's normal that they are all missing- they are with their cases. You will need male square bench keys to wind/disarm them. Vintagewatchstraps has a great writeup on the different systems. But basically, any American "x" size movement will fit any case for that size, possibly with some adjusting of the stem position. With Swiss movements, there is some interchangeability between calibers, usually within the same maker's range, but not really overall- there are thousands of different stems out there.
    • Hi, I'm very new to watchmaking and this is my first time posting here.  I've bought a lot of 10 vintage pocket watches size 0s from e-bay and just got them today.  Most of the balance wheels sprung quite freely and thus seemed like a worthy endeavor as a first batch for exploration.  I've just realized that none of them have any winding stems. Is there any way I could source appropriate winding stems for the movements? There seems to be assortments of various stems selling in bulk on aliexpress, but would any of them fit?  I've read on other threads that some people lathe their own stems (which is waaaay out of my current skill set, which is pretty much nil). Others say that you 'just have to try a few and see if they fit'. I would much appreciate any advice for this matter. Thanks!
    • Nice work.  In the last year, I have been servicing Accutron 218s.  I have the official Accutron hoder that provides electrical contact to the movement.  It is a pretty clever design.  There is a cut in the ring of the holder (shaped like a "C").  When in relaxed state, the holder is slightly smaller than the watch movement.  You spread the cut slightly and drop the movement in and release.  Very clean.  I have made 3D versions of this setup.  Have not explored using it generally for other movements.
    • Double Oooooo   Removal tool? Dreamed of one of these. However, Kalle on Chronoglide showed everyone my system with the pegwood. Worked a treat. Felt so chuffed to be mentioned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTFrXjiyGKc 46:40 for the wheel removal. Mentions me at 50:00 and does the removal with the pegwood. Felt like my 15 minutes of fame.
