Seiko 6119 6400 help!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi one and all, I have a Seiko 6119-6400 that I purchased with a broken off winding stem and missing crown. On removing the broken stem I found the new stem wouldn't "click" in, after taking excellent advice from this forum I found the stem release button had been pushed through too far. I removed movement from the case and then removed the dial, date ring, day disc, etc and put the parts that had been pushed out back in their correct positions and reassembled. Now when I push the crown in the date ring advances one day, but I can't get the day disc to move/advance. The problem is that I have never owned a 6119-6400 before and have no idea how it should work, I only found how to advance the date by accident and can't fathom how the day disc should be advanced. This leaves me wondering if it's my lack of knowledge or I have made a mistake? Any advice gratefully received. Johnnie

The day is advanced by pressing the crown a little harder. In that way you turn the day ring. There is a little finger on the movement that hits the dayring. Did you get the dayring in the right position when you put it on?

Hi Rogart, thanks for replying. I am not sure if I got that part right so will have to disassemble and look. The problem is that I really don't know where to look. Hopefully I will spot where I have messed up. At least now I have an idea what I am looking for.

Hi Rogart. This is where I am at. You are right about pushing crown a bit further, but when I refit the dial the date wheel will advance but the day will seems to jam up.

So you got a replacement crown and stem?

1. If you've trimmed the stem too short the crown will bottom to soon an won't allow full movement.

2. The crown design may not allow full movement.

3. If you are using a used crown, the crown may have dirt in the inside that prevents the stem to gVe full movement.

Try pushing the crown and see if the day changes.. if it does then your problem in the stem or crown.

All the best.

The day ring is is broken. The yellow ring in the middlle should come of to . And the star shaped part should sit on the dayring. Could maybe be put back together. But maybe it's easier to get a new dayring? Is it black or white?  124112V2.JPG.6d44c95b4f2b2f5d88b9a1be9b98965b.JPG

That is missing the star inside. I have one i think. Shall just see if it's the right one. Yours have 870 557 and mine has 870 559. Have a 870 670 also. But that has other languages.

Hi Rogart, great! I am pleased something is missing, I was careful taking the day wheel off. Now wondering if the bit that's missing has been left behind if that's possible?

The part that is missing is still on the movement.  You will have to take the little brass ring that sits on the hour wheel off. Then you can remove the star shaped gear by lifting it up. It's tricky to put the star back in the right position but can be done. But need to be in the exact same place as it was before. Easiest is to replace the disc. Is it a 4 a clock crown on your watch.

    • It's probably a cardinal rule for watch repair to never get distracted while at the bench. Yesterday, after finishing a tricky mainspring winding/barrel insertion (I didn't have a winder and arbor that fit very well) I mentally shifted down a gear once that hurdle was passed. There were other things going on in the room as I put the barrel and cover into the barrel closer and pressed to get that satisfying snap. But when I took it out I realized I never placed the arbor.  When opening a barrel, we are relying on the arbor to transfer a concentrically-distributed force right where it is needed at the internal center of the lid. However, when that isn't present it's difficult to apply pressure or get leverage considering the recessed position of the lid, the small holes in the barrel and the presence of the mainspring coils. It was a beat-up practice movement so I didn't take a lot of time to think it over and I pushed it out using a short right-angle dental probe placed in from the bottom, but that did leave a bit of a scratch and crease in the thin lid. I had also thought about pulling it using a course-threaded screw with a minor thread diameter smaller than the lid hole and a major diameter larger, but that may have done some damage as well.  Thinking about how this might have been handled had it been a more valuable movement, is there a method using watchmaking or other tools that should extract the lid with the least damage?
    • 🤔 what happens if lubrication is placed directly on top of epilame ? Making a small groove so the lubrication doesn't spread across the component but what if when lubing a little overspills and sits on the epilame .
    • Why just the bottom mike ? Is it worth polishing the whole arm ?
    • The one thing I took time over was to round and polish the curves at the bottom of the jumper arm. The slightest mark (left over from cutting of filing) acts as a stress raiser, just where you don't need it.
    • I printed the base and it is a bit too large to fit on the base of the hand setter. The ring bumps into the column so it is unable to full seat on the central ring. I'm going to try removing some of the materal and see if I can't get it to go down.
