Watch Makers bench

This is the first time i have posted and would really appreciate all your comments. (well I posted yesterday but cannot see my posts)

We have been asked to make some watch makers benches. On the front top of the bench there is often a part that sticks out. (sorry, I am sure there is a word for this), My question is. is there an ideal width and depth of this part. I dont mean the bench peg on a jewellers bench. I mean the part that sticks out and is the same part as the bench top.

That's a really really nice bench.  Says the fellow who has a small table top bench and is happy to have that. :))
