Out for a test drive... Just finished putting this one together... The movement is a dual train design. Basically, it's two movements on one plate.. The left side train just runs the left balance wheel while the right side side balance and the motion work. If any one is curious, the extra function of the motion work does reduce power to the balance wheel. 

The left balance wheel has an amplitude of approximately 310 degrees while the right balance will has an amplitude of approximately 285 degrees. For some reason I was not equating this difference to the motion work and thought there was an additional problem. I spent a good amount of time looking for the cause and after switching all the components from left to right I got the same result, lower amplitude on the right side with the addition of powering the motion work as opposed to the left side that just had to transmit power to the balance wheel..

Hi guys.. its the middle of the week but here in Malaysia we're starting a 4 day weekend (independance day on the 31st Aug, Eid al-Adha on the 1st Sept)..yayy! There is also a strong possibility that next Monday may be declared a public holiday as well as we have exceeded our target for the Sea Games... If it happens it will be announced during the closing ceremonies this evening... heres hoping!

Anyway, back to watches!

Today I pulled out this neat Sandoz hand-wind. This is a stainless steel model and would have been one up the ladder compared to its lesser and more common base-metal cased brethren. The lume has aged and even fallen off the hands. There was some writing on the dial.. I believe 17 jewels, shock-proof and anti-magnetic  but its pretty much gone. Luckily the hour markers and indices as well as the 'Sandoz' script and logo were stamped/cast (?) into the dial so they're all present. They have a goldish look and I believe they're plated but how they did this is a mystery. The minute markers are all present and the textured surface of the inner part is nice and its topped off by some nicely plated hands and a seconds hand with a pointed tip painted red.

The crown is an original Sandoz

And the caseback is typical for a watch from the 50s.

Inside we have a trusty ETA 1080 but looks like Sandoz made some effort to make it look a bit different by designing the bridges a bit different. The usual 1080 bridge has straight sides and this has more curves. Simple and reliable.

Wrist shot. It is a 'boy size' around 32mm without crown but its not really noticeable.

A few weeks ago I was following the auction on a very Minty Hamilton "Rodney" watch . This watch has what is called a Quadrant colored dial which I am partial to . 

I shared this Bulova Royal Clipper on this post a while back that also had a quadrant dial....

 

The Hamilton Rodney finally sold to some lucky bidder for $300 .

A few days later another Rodney came up for auction but the dial looked dark and the quadrant didn't show up very well in the pics .  I figured that there was a gem hiding in the darkness so I got the watch for $74 .

 

After I got the watch I took the movement out and cleaned the case and crystal in my ultra-sonic and indeed , the dial had a smokey dark look to it . 

I took a BIG chance and decided to try and clean up the dial knowing full well that I may do irreversible damage to it . I am talking from more then 1 experience here .......

First I said a little prayer ,..."Oh Please Watch God , don't let me mess this dial up....Pleeze "...then I proceeded .

Well somebody up there must like me cuz it came through the operation OK....Whew !!

 

 

Feeling ahead of the game now , I ordered a nice retro looking Hirsch watch band to compliment Rodney ...

 

Looking pretty Spiffy if I do say so myself .

Wearing a hand wind 'no-seconds' Kienzle. This is as simple as horology can get.

Dial has some nice surface texture but the printed words have suffered a bit.

It has a stainless steel case which I believe is a front loader as there is no visible gap where a case-opener can be inserted.

On some front loaders, the bezel comes off and the movement comes out compete with the stem as there is a notch in the case but in this case (pun intended!) it looks like a 2 piece stem.

Anyone taken apart one of these before? I am guessing that this is one of the watches where you have to align the stem in such a way that the movement can slip right out, as opposed to the type where you just pull on the crown.

This watch will be getting a service soon as its running a bit slow (5 mins in 24hrs). The last time I wore it it was pretty much spot on. With 17jewels for a no-seconds movement I would imagine that it has capped escape wheel jewels and should be capable of good timekeeping.

While Kienzle made some inhouse movments.. most of them were pretty coarse and looked more like clock movements.. not surprising as Kienzle was a big clock manufacturer. They also used some EB movements. Judging by the way this one winds and the sound of its 'ticks' (not to mention the 'Swiss' on the dial) I'm hoping there's a better quality movement inside!

Bezel lightly sanded (Had weld splatter)
Bezel numbers repainted
Incorrect corroded 7s26 counterweight replaced
New crystal with correct bevel
Replaced partial clasp with one from donor bracelet

Haven't serviced the movement as that is still out of my range of skills at the moment and lack of permanent work area doesn't help but it's currently running at -1min per 24hrs approx.

Thanks for posting. My first watch repair job was a pin lever and yes they are noisy little buggers. I can hear them ticking when I stop at a red light and at night I wear earplugs to sleep. I have several in my collection.

Hi guys,

Today I dug out a HMT Kohinoor handwind. Pretty straightforward as watches go. Stainless steel no date. Its supposedly water-proof but I would't trust what it says on the tin. It has a stainless steel case which is better than a plated one anyway! The lume works for a few seconds after a blast from my phone's LED but it goes off after about 2 minutes. It has a weird ''çartouche'' at six oclock.. anyone have a clue what it means?

Inside it has a HMT movement which is basically a licensed Ctizen 0200 movement.. its pretty identical down to the balance shock-protection. I have to say Citizens movement is much better finished! I can forgive the lower level of finishing but there's no excuse for the fingerprints on the ratchet wheel and trains bridge. While these fingerprints usually hint at the competence (or lack thereof) of the person who was in here last.. this watch still runs reasonable well. I've been wearing it for three days straight and haven't needed to adjust it.

The watch doesn't try to hide its origins and states pretty clearly where its from.

One thing I just noticed while taking these pics is the number on the case back really looks like a date. In this case 5th Nov 1992. Not much of a serial number unless they made one a day but thats what it looks like to me!

This hunter is from my Dad's family. I must compliment my ancestor for his fine taste. But what Dad does't let go (he passed a nice Omega too), is the British-cased Rolex. 

I don't know about the case mark, maybe someone does?

Not too shabby for being 118 years old, I'm not going to mess with it in any way.

Its very very nice. I worked on one of these a while back. I think the timegrapher reading are OK--probably a dry/sticky mainspring. Everything about it is classy.
