There was so much gen-yew-whine "patina" in the Nino that it didn't run for more than 20 mins at a time (despite the assurances of recent servicing etc).  It is still a little flakey and the amplitude is lower than I would like, but it is going much better after a strip down and clean.
It also had a problem with the recycled sardine can movement ring. I had to remove one of the tabs from this, as every time you screwed the back down completely, the tab it would press on one of the bridges and bring the thing to a halt.

That's not the movement ring. That's the new and improved Indian 'hacking' upgrade. :)

Genyouwine...is there a new word in the horological lexicon?

Yep, right next to the revised definition of patina. :D

Love this mini Hamilton Khaki [emoji3] from the bay. A kinetic that, you guessed it needs a new capacitor. However I've had it charging on my Phillips candle charger and it is holding a charge now. No more 2 tick nonsense.d287d331abdec2d2e9dfb87f86518df3.jpg

Todays.

Poljot alarm. Needs the alarm section looking at which is more of a head scratching exercise rather than a repair as such as the hammer fouls the regulator pin which was most likely why it was way out of beat and in excess of +500 seconds a day gain when received.

I'll see how the timekeeping goes with a test run on the wrist and address the alarm hammer and positioning later once I know the timing side is maintaining consistency.

Yeah I just dug up my Stellaris, and I'm beginning to think I'm missing the trick to access the movement. I don't see any edges that can accomodate a case knife or even a scalpel (which I tried). I pulled out the crown and tried to access it via the crystal but couldn't get a good enough grip to compress it. When I  look into the battery opening, I can see it reads "Nine Jewels" and I do see a seam inside, but I cannot open this case either. You said you couldn't either....

What do you see with the button door unscrewed? Anything in there that might secure it?

    • This set lever seems to working ok unhardened Nickelsilver, might it deform if i leave it that way ?
    • I found this from a while back CS100 seems fine, but at around 500 Vickers it's not quite as hard as "blue" steel, but still harder than annealed. I'd try to find annealed (the post above has a U.K. supplier of small quantities).
    • As an experiment i was thinking of not hardening it to see how it fairs. Now that i have a complete template i could knock up another in half the time if this loses its elasticity. I might play about with a few pieces today to test their bending and spring properties. This was cs 100 the supplier quoted in annealed state, it was nice to work with files so I'm taking it thats its state. What you are looking seems like it would need annealing to work it. This is why i went for this stuff that cuts out that process, it was so easy to work.
    • Showing state of hairspring on receipt, backplate & 'dished' wheel.  Thanks, Nev. Amplitude v. weak - balance wheel turns over arc of only ~20deg. Don't know how to calculate movement rate or safely vibrate balance spring! Meantime I have reduced the 'dishing' & clock no longer runs for more than a few minutes except face down which supports my theory that it was 'dished' as a hack to avoid doing a proper repair.
    • I would harden and temper (to a light blue). It's so easy to do and only takes a couple of minutes. A search on ebay UK for "spring steel strip cs" finds plenty available in small quantites and thicknesses from 0.1mm up.  But the question is ( @nickelsilver) which "CS" number is best for watch parts ?  Also, from one of the ads : "CARBON SPRING STEEL. SIZE IS METRIC 15.00mm X 0.10mm X 304 MM  CS100 FINISH BRIGHT . HARDENED AND TEMPERD TO 480-530VPN" I've no idea about 480-530VPN. Does that mean it needs annealing before working?       Have you seen this video, he shows how to determine where the indents go ?
