No, it's a bi-directional system, refer to following picture.

Production dates for 51xx series movements were between 1967 and 1971.

56xx series movements between 1968 and 1978.

I believe though that the main thrust of Seiko's marketing campaign, at least in the UK, was directed towards their lower end watches. You don't see too many LordMatic's around, and I think that Grand Seiko's have only ever been aimed at the Japanese domestic market, so it's quite likely that a lot of watchmakers didn't encounter them.

LordMatic's though, if you spot them, are well worth a punt. They are excellent watches and (at least in my view) are somewhat underrated. You can get a hell of a lot of watch for your money.
