Staking punches

Recommended Posts

So, finally managed to snag myself a staking set from eBay. It's a vintage Boley and Leinen set and it looks a bit rough - this is OK as I didn't pay a lot of money for it. Some of the punches look like they have been used to drift out truck wheel bearings!

Anyway, I am planning on cleaning up the punches (soak in Evaporust followed by chucking them up in my drill and polish with wire wool and oil) plus working on the ends with an oil stone /Emery cloth to debur and tidy up. I will also make a new lid for the box and repaint the 'anvil' (this is the non-functional part of the restoration, purely for beauty 😉).

Do staking punches come in a common size? 5mm? If so can I buy replacements / new to pad out and complete my set? I had a look on Cousins and they only sold complete sets, not individual punches so I am guessing that I would need to find odd used punches on eBay rather than being able to buy new replacements.

I haven't received the set yet so can't measure the punches but they look a similar diameter to others.

Most popular is 4.7mm stakes, there are also 5mm sets available for some makes and i think a 3.4mm to fit a small framed favourite tool.  You have no stumps with this set though,a stake reversing sub base would be handy in this situation .

Actually, I did wonder about this. The eBay ad describes it as a 'dual anvil' which implies it is a 'reverso' type that uses the punches as stumps (that's what the obviously larger hole on the baseplate is for). This would need an extended base to allow the punch to stand upright as a stump. With the two photographs I have of the set, I can't quite determine whether there's an extended base in the box or not. Failing that, perhaps I can make something to allow this or even buy an expensive Bergeron base that doesn't quite fit.

Interesting. I wonder why I didn't see these when I looked. Hopefully these are a compatible size for my set. Worst case, I could maybe make a spacer brass sleeve to fit in the anvil to take different punches.

You could make something, the extra base clicks into the frame and the through hole needs to be in direct line with the hole in the anvil. I wouldn't buy anything but the factory made base. Buying the stumps might be a better, i cant say I've ever seen the bases come up for sale separately, I've been looking for a base for my Star tool for years.

Also, as I only learned about 3 days ago, Cousins sells individual stumps & punches of the types supplied with modern Bergeon staking sets. Single stumps are only around ï¿¡10-12 so buying the ones you need is not the most expensive path to take.
