Schatz 53 torsion clock( Anniversary )

Dell

Recommended Posts

This fell into my  lap today Schatz 53 with wall bracket it’s rare to find them as complete as this , manufactured Feb 68 and the only thing missing is the torsion spring ( usually broken) anyway.

It’s been well over oiled but should polish up very nicely and Schatz are usually very strong runners, the only thing you have to watch on later Schatz torsion clocks is that the bush for the anchor rear pivot is in the back cock and one hole of said back cock is elongated so is in effect the eccentric bush to set the drops.

Found a few things wrong that’s probably why it was sold, the top had a bit of damage to one corner so it had probably fallen, only one jewel the other has been replaced with a bush that is to long  so that would cause extra friction and a bush for the escape wheel that is to long as well and probably because the escape wheel arbor has a broken pivot they tried the long bush to reach the remaining part of the pivot.
As for making small mark to be able to setup the drops what marks do I go by 😂1st picture, I only put a very inconspicuous small mark on the side of the plate when I service them, this one has quite a few on face of plate.

Well I have to start somewhere so I decided to replace the broken pivot on escape wheel first, not done one that small before although I have done a few standard torsion clock arbors but it turned out fine.

Found even more wrong looks like the mainspring was changed to a very strong one again probably trying to get it to run.

Short video of it running ( 2 hours at the moment) after re pivoting, milling long bush flush, adding a bush where the jewel should be in back cock ( it had a bush way to long and hole to big, replaced mainspring for an original I had in stock, I just wanted to make sure it would run before I did all the cleaning, polishing & lacquering although I will look out for a back cock with the jewel in it’s the same as the back cock on my 1000 day.

The design language is that of a carriage candle lamp, are these common Dell? I haven’t seen one in that style before.

Hi Tom

The clock I quite common but to come with the wall bracket is quite rare , I have seen a few wall brackets for sale but not together, in the 50’s the company’s that were still selling torsion clocks tried different designs to boost sales I suppose here is Kundo’s take on it.

That is a first for me. I have never seen one on a wall bracket. Dell is the clock fixed to the bracket or does it just stand on it?

They all just sit on the bracket hence a lot that are damaged , here is what I am after stupid price just for case and anyway unless you have a movement not worth buying because they are rarer than rocking horse poo.

Why is that link just showing an empty wall clock case, but the description is about what you have posted.

That’s the thing it is just an empty clock case for that money , it is one of the very first torsion anniversary clocks just a shame it’s just the case , it’s on my bucket list along with an Aran crane, and it should look like this.IMG_2901.thumb.jpeg.54f7648bdcd1346227d825ac81b38465.jpegIMG_2900.thumb.jpeg.60a6a6e247ffb878ab598d674e5fdd92.jpeg
