Dumb bid on eBay, self inflicted newb mistake

Recommended Posts

I find it interesting to use a website that will tell you what items have the most bids or watchers using standard criteria eBay search.   In an effort to "learn" what the market is doing.  And no, this is not a get rich plan.  More a don't flush money plan....I seem to have found the toilet lever.

The below watch is from US shipper.  I limit myself currently to just US sellers to reduce complexity, risk.  As a lark I tossed in a bid a dollar higher this morning with the belief I'd be quickly outbid. Well, I'm still the high bidder for this 17J 352 automatic movement.  I thought Longines are high end watches.  Maybe I will be ready to service in 2-3 years but not now.  Please outbid me 🙂   Item 256569152990   I really do not need this.  All I had to drink was coffee.

That is a relief.  Two people wanted it more than me thank goodness.  The winner went manual bid mode and amazingly placed 6 manual bids in 19 seconds.  Some find it to be a rush.  I usually do not win and...happily I need nothing just bottom fishing for movements to learn about, practice on.

The guy will have set in a maximum bid that kicks in a new figure everytime someone places a single higher bid or their maximum steps up. A sneaky way to win is to snipe bid in the last few seconds but i think even that was pointless against sniping softwear previously. Recently I've noticed something new, the outcome is sometimes delayed while ebay determines the winner, so regardless of what bid is placed at the dead point of auction end the highest maximum overall bid takes the item.

The highest maxiumum bid that is set during the aution's open time. Though frowned upon , what i like about sniping is the fact it can avoid getting into a maximum bidding war with others that watch the last hour. They up their maximum bid then you up your maximum bid and so on. Placing your max in the last few seconds prevents all that drama 😆, you either win or you dont. I like to close my phone case and not look at the final result for an hour or so 🤣

You need to discover the joys of the 404 and 1010 clubs. Guilt free bidding for your morning coffee time that rivals said coffee in price (assuming you go the Starbucks or similar route). Plus, some cheapies to notch your bedpost with to gain the skills for some of the more exciting fare.

For whatever it's worth, this same method is how I bought first my staking set and later my jeweling set. Each time "oh what's wrong with a low bid when we know someone else will snipe it at the end!" ... well before I was ready to actually spend on those tools or do any research on either.

The website can be found.

http://www.watchcount.com/bids.php

It does not help me find the diamonds in the rough for practice tear down and rebuild.  But I do find it interesting what the secondary market is.  I put in watch -apple -rolex -omega to exclude brands I am not interested in learning about.  Here is the staking set with the most bids.

As for 404 or 1010...  As a newb I am paying high.  Seeking the Caravelle 11DP cheap stuff....so far I have three but one turned out to be a 17J AS 1686.  A win.  My best win....for me....has been the below.  Turned out to be an ETA 2372 for $10.  I can see buying lots is the way to 'average down' your each unit cost.  But in a 7 watch lot, often 6 of the other watches have a value of $0.  So USD$30/7=$4.29 is really....  $30 for one watch.  And then you have the Seiko movement insanity.....phew
