Seitz Jauge: Are They Still Available To Buy?

Hi,

Some of my projects are stopped due cracked jewels. This means is a motivation to move into jewel setting activities.

Recently bought a setting jewel machine. In order to measure the inner jewel diameter, as shown by Mark Lovick on the related video, he uses a calibrated set of jewels inserted on a plate: the Jauge Seitz. Seems to me the best, and the most efficient way to measure the inner diameter.

Are they still available on the market? Are there other suggested options?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Henrique

I am also in the market for a jewelling gauge but judging by the second hand prices these things command I would imagine the new prices are astronomical so I have it in mind to make my own.

I reckon that if I buy a selection of assorted size jewels and set them into a brass plate appropriately labeled I would not only end up with a cut price gauge, but I would also get a bit of practice setting jewels.

Hi Marc

I think that would be a really good exercise, but I do wonder if it would work out costing you quite a bit. Even if you could get a fair selection of quality sized jewels in an assortment (not something I've noticed that much), you'd probably have to buy quite a few as well to fill out all the sizes needed. I have a thread in wanted items looking for two jewels for my gauge, one of which I've never even seen for sale. This gauge is pretty much what you describe, a homemade one and I picked it up for a good price, but it's another thing I haven't seen for sale often. I think it used to be (perhaps still is?) the sort of item watchmaking students make, but they then probably use them not sell them ;).

chadders you're not kidding..

I just checked the price of Seitz jewels at Cousins and ouch!!!!

For some reason I had assumed that the DIY approach would be cheaper, not so though.

I guess I will have to keep an eye on the second hand market.
