Install/replace part 228/8270 Venus 170

Recommended Posts

I had occasion to reset the set lever. When doing so, I found a piece of the above part lodged under the rocking bar?. I don't know if I broke this part or if it had been broken previosly and ended up where it ended up. I have the part, but without an exploded view I have no idea of the location or if it something I want to try to replace.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Mike,  Thanks for your response.  Can't provide fotos of the problem, because my problem is that I don't know where  the part has to go. I have the tech sheets, but can't seem to find assembly and/or disassembly articles that would show the location of the part. Because I found the broken part on dial side under the rocking bar, I thought it might be changeable from dial side, but when I look at the dial side on another 170, I don't see the part. I'm thinking it is positioned somewhere on balance side and I'm not prepared to enter that side blindly or I will have turned an otherwise nice watch into parts. I'm sure that doesn't help you. I am looking for explode views of the 170 or some disassemblies views of the movement.

Regards Jack

Jack, you might want to read through this post from 2016 that discusses working on a 170 movement.

It is possible that you can reach out to those engaged in that discussion for more info. Generic chrono diagrams (as shown below) likely won't be much help.

You might also consider taking Mark's Level 5 course on chronographs. While his course will use a Chinese movement, once you've gone through it you might feel more confident tackling yours?

One of the problems and watch repair is the assumption it's like automobile repair and detailed manuals are available for every single watch in the universe. Reality is if you're lucky you'll find a parts list. Really lucky the parts list might actually have pictures of the parts and then if you're extremely lucky there might exist some sort of technical documentation that you might actually build a get if you're lucky.

Looks like you're extremely lucky or you're just lucky I remembered something to find you there is a link and I snipped out an image. So at the link you scroll to where you find that the second link that says 170 that switchers seeking. You'll find it's a complete service manual independently written on this particular watch.

Great find John! Who could ask for anything more? OK, next will be the: "Where can I get a replacement part ####?"

If it's a chronograph you're probably screwed. Usually anything that's delicate and breakable which would be what a chronograph Has whatever was breakable was broken a long time ago and there's no more spare parts left. Which is unfortunately why when you look at eBay you'll see watches disassembled for the parts because the parts are worth way more than the movement itself is worth.

One of the problems when asking for help is making sure everything is in the message body. He asked you put really important clue in the title but I typically don't read the title beyond getting made to the discussion then I read the text in the discussion and that the text is missing the important clue from the title well then I'm screwed here. So the important clue from the title is 228/8270

The problem then becomes I don't see that clue in the description and if you have the part number you what had the part name which is minute recorder jumper and that would've been extremely helpful in this discussion.

For those not familiar with the minute recorder jumper if it breaks your screwed. I don't know if somebody can laser weld it back to the base or not and yes they are really really easy to break. The often see this on watches on eBay where they are missing.

In any case providing I put the pieces correctly together I have pictures the minute recorder jumper and I've circled it on the movement.

Oh and as watch repair is a visual oriented hobby it would've been nice to have a picture of the movement we probably could it just found the missing component anyway it's a low hard the work in a dark with the description that's not entirely clear. red out what was missing.

    • Never and others. Yes like you I do spend a fair amount of time reading the contents of this forum. I find it better that any other. clear, lucid, no Prima Donas, and most of all an easy access without adverts. All thanks to Mark. God bless you mate. You give so much to many of us. What if? No Mark? Hypothetically. A forum. I did run a forum for a few years. Really enjoyed it, but became so engrossed that it did affect my health. I gave to to others to run. Not been back. It was very successful and rivalled a number of large paying sites. No adverts, no others but me. I did ask and listen to members comments and it worked well.    Costs Having a domain name, £10 annually.  Register the site with a forum company, free. Build the site using the forum company guide lines, free. It looked and ran almost the same a Mark's. All the same facilities. The cost was only £5 per month, but counted visits (views). If I recall, it was that price for 5,000 views. Each extra 5,000 views increased the price by £2 per month. Success was my own personal undoing. From £5 per month initially, it rose to £60 a month and looked like increasing. This was 10 years ago. I could not afford that, and asked it anyone would like to take over and someone did. I would assume that this is the price that Mark is funding for us all. His return is our continued comments on the internet about his course, and the fact that many of the big names on YouTube mention him as their Tutor. Those of us who have done, and are still using, his course, benefit. In comparison to other courses, I can't believe how cheap it is, and the value is exceptional. It is the structure that gives the value. Long may Mark reign. Ross
    • Get someone local to tig it ,very easy fix and should only take a few minutes so probably wouldn’t cost much ,or failing that get it very clean and silver solder it. Dell
    • Hi, The winding pin is not split, well that's how it was when I obtained the watch. The movement is front-loaded and here's a picture of where the case screws are fitted. The face picture is before I dismantled it. Quick update.  I've always had a nylon ring sitting in the parts try that I wasn't sure where it went and left it to the last thing as I know it must be part of the case assembly. Anyway, looking at the picture in my last post you can see, just under the winding stem, a white-looking object, this is the nylon ring 🤭 So, I had to remove the dial again and replace the ring. Once this was all back together I placed the movement in the case and realized my initial problem maybe is not a problem as it looks like I can screw the movement back in the case and then place the hands as the dial is nearly flush with the outside of the case anyway so I'll be able to check for alignment. if all is good then just fit the crystal and bezel 🤔 I can't think of any issues with this approach but please comment if you think I've not thought of something. Another lesson learned as well. Take more pictures not just of the movement parts and location 😅
    • I dont think mine is. Its an idea to have them all in one place if possible, then a quick screenshot will have them saved. Unless anyone has any other ideas of how to reconnect
