What can affect on watch amplitude? We were testing orient 3 stars 46943 on Witschi and the aplitude while dial up is 280, while dial was to the left side amplitude was around 240-250 what is kinda low.

When you say dial left do you mean vertical? If so your amplitudes are not just normal but excellent. If you mean dial down then the amplitudes should be the same within a few degrees.

 

In the first case amplitude drops because you are going from the balance resting on the tip of a pivot on a flat jewel to both pivots resting on two jewels. So more friction, less amplitude.

 

In the second case, you could have a pivot end that is too flat, a cap jewel that is worn, or just some foreign matter in the jewel.

Well, yes, i meant vertical. Is 240 amplitude really good for Orient? Sorry i don't know all the termins in English it's not my native language. So, you mean jewel - that's the stone on top of the balance?

Yes! In my experience, a somewhat lower amplitude is to be expected from Seiko movements and Seiko-like movements like Orient.

I'm afraid not. I have a Weishi 1900. Even so, I take all TMs with a big grain of salt. You can find plenty of info on WRT by Googling:

The most important thing is that you set the lift angle on your TM to the correct value or the amplitude reading can not be trusted.

Well i wanted to know what does this line on the screen mean. Moreover, while checking orient 3 stars there were 2 parallel lines, which is kinda strange.

And another question, what does this circle trigger do?

The line is a visual depiction of the rate. Straight across is 0s, heading down, losing, heading up, gaining. A solid line means the watch is perfectly in beat, a double line is out of beat, with the spacing relative to how much beat error there is.

 

You should ask Witschi for a manual if you don't have one; here is a link to their "training course" with all you will need to know (used to be on their website but not anymore).

 

Play around with your machine in the meantime: it should be set to "aut",, so it detects and sets the freqency, or "man" where you tell it the frequency. There you have it set to frequency, so it isn't giving you what you really want here- that watch's frequency is 21,600.

  A recent advice  by master nicklesilver, revealed  the sursprising effect of diry fork horn on amplitude. Fork pivots shouldn't be lubed and I will no longer be oiling impulse jewels.

Like you mean that there is no need to oil the fork and escape wheel ?

No oil on fork PIVOTS.

Oiling the horn would expectedly reduce friction on the rough surface. 

As for my experience, my late friend( watch repairman) gave me a bit of compound he had, to polish parts with, have polished fork horn with it and gained amplitude.

See  above discussion,

Having suspected rough surface in the fork slots I suggested oiling to see what happens, a test I often do myself. 

The issue turned out to be dirty horn. 

In conclusion , no oil on impulse jewel, as it will accumulates on the horn causing problem.

Fork pivot is said not to be oiled at all as it moves little.

In a discussion Seiko was said to oil fork pivots to gain stability.

    • Hey guys, My wife and I started our little company in Borneo back in 03. When covid hit and things got crazy, I stumbled down the horological rabbit hole. I fell HARD. Next thing I know, I'm on this forum, modding, assembling, and restoring old watches. The wife, bless her heart, she put her foot down and said I cannot buy or make any more watches for myself. Well, a horological addict is still a addict and I am no quitter. So I figured, why not make some watches for my employees who have been with us for over a decade, they deserve something special. It sure is not for me. So the planning started early this year, scouring the interwebs for parts that will scratch this itch and make my watchmaking dreams come true. It was a tough slog, looking at all those tempting parts, dials, hands, cases and movements. I think I managed to gather all the parts that I needed and with some waiting, elbow grease and much choice swearing, I think I put together what I want to gift my guys and gals. So here's what is wild. I got about 40 of these things to make by the middle of the year. FORTY. Its like I got a whole watch making factory in my actual factory. Wish me luck folks, I am on a watchmaking mission, and nothing is going to stop me. Except maybe the wife, if she finds out how many watches I'm really making.       Stephen      
    • Do you need to return the tin / zinc / plexiglass surface to flat once in a while, and how do you do it? I can imagine the surface becoming concave in time, or does that not happen because of the embedded abrasive?
    • And in normal me fashion everything is going south. My amplitude after running for a day is around the 220 to 230 mark 2 hours from a full wind. At full wind it's about 250ish. Not ideal. I re-oiled the balance and it didn't do much. I"m gonna double check some things and see if i can get that amplitude up unless people think that's acceptable for a 55 year old watch/balance. If i can't get it up and that's not acceptable i might just put the new balance i got on it but i'd REALLY like to keep the gold balance wheel. THen there's these f'ing things.   How on EARTH do you get them in? I double chekced and it's the exact same dimensions of the one that came with it. I can press that one in with my thumbs. I already broke on eof the two i got trying to get it in with a press. I can't find anything other than they go in easily with a normal crystal press.   I have one more shot to get it right. I've been trying to round over the edges and sand it down a bit to get it in there. Any tips would be greately appreciated.
