Bought a hilarious feiko frankenwatch

Recommended Posts

Still working on my collection of cheap watches to tinker with and came across this.... watch... on ebay. For the price I just couldn't pass it up.

A "vintage" Seiko 5.

Crown at 3 o'clock.

Hands with lume that doesn't match the dial lume (does the dial have lume? Another mystery!)

Square dial in oval case.

Exhibition back for.. some.. reason?

Fake dial that is either misprinted slightly off center or has broken dial feet (or both!).

Unreadable movement number unfortunately.

It's gonna take about 6 weeks to get here on a slow boat, but I already can't wait to find out what. And why!

Haha yup! This is actually the third Mumbai Special (Delhi Delight!) I've bought. Funnily enough, the other two literally turned up today! I wasn't expecting them for another couple of weeks, but here they are. I'll upload some pics tonight.

Both Seiki 5's, one is actually fairly legit looking , the other is a complete basketcase that I can't wait to get into.

Also a Seiko Actus turned up in the mail (not from India) that l'm pretty sure is legit. Dial isn't in great shape but it's all period correct and the serial dates it to 1975. Once again, looking forward to opening it up.

Are any of these 404 contenders?

Sorry I didn't see your reply until just now! I stumbled across the 404 thread today. Sadly no, they wouldn't meet the criteria for that. I wish I knew where to get cheap watches from, even these complete garbage ones are ~$30.

I think I'm good for hobby watches now, but I wouldn't turn down some real cheap movements to add to the collection.

    • You don't have to use his special tester. Any good multimeter would work.
    • Yes, it looks like GT Revue 30. Doctor, You can not replace escape wheel by the dimensions You listed. One needs to know much more things like number of leaves of the pinion and it's diameter, the position in high of the table and the pinion, the hight between the pivots, the exact pivots diameter... And then, even if suitable wheel is found, one will need to know how to adjust the pallets position correctly. Restoring antique movements is something different than replacing parts. In older movements parts are not interchangeable, this means spare parts do not exist. Here the case is different, but still escapement adjustment will be needed if a wheel from a donor is found. So may be it will be easier to restore the donor for You...Restoring antique movements usually means making of the parts needed and this requires knowlage and working on lathes skill. In this case repivoting of the wheel is the natural solution, but there is a long way that one must walk untill getting ready for such work.
    • I was looking at Essence of Renata, a chemical used a lot for cleaning hairsprings: "Specially prepared solution for degreasing watch and instrument components. Indispensable for degreasing hairsprings." Looking at the MSDS you can see this is just pure n-Heptane, so could be an option for those who don't want to use the chlorocarbons or hexane?     HF6013 - Horological Essence COSHH Safety Data Sheet Horological Essence_0.pdf
