German "Submarine" Clock - What Should I Offer?

Hello Everyone,

I have been approached by a seller of a "German Submarine Clock".  They want an offer.

Peter Grande says they are junk and not worth it at any price (hahahaha, Peter is so *extreme*)

Let's be reasonable.  Everything has an appropriate price...what should I offer for this?

Can you help me with a price range please?

I have no experience buying this type of timepiece and need some help from those more expert and experienced than I.

Here's some pics (there are not many, but the seller did send me a video of him winding the clock and then the seconds hand moving)

I have no idea about the market price but an idea about what is behind the dial.

For me it is a Junghans with an W146 movement. These kind of watches for marine usage were still being manufactured years after WW2. If the housing is of steel instead of brass it might be an after WW2 version. The movement is quite simple.

Yes. The Germans, as were most countries, were greatly in awe of British workmanship and used English identification quality markings on a whole range of products of that age and nowadays.

My kids toys have 'Made in S Korea' imprinted in English. My 1920 vintage watch has 'Swiss made' liberally plastered over the movement and back casing.

I am dubious.  What few Kriegsmarine clocks I've seen did not say "made in Germany" on the dial, or anything else, not even in German, let alone any language of the Allied forces.  If they have anything on the dial beside numbers, there is often the German eagle atop the accursed sw****ka and a Capitol "M" below.  I suspect this one to be maybe a reproduction but I admit I am no expert on them.

As to price, I am the wrong one to speculate as I would not allow a genuine clock of that nature in my house, so persuading me to pay for it also would be impossible.

I would be very careful with this for starters there is no motive on the dial. A Genuine Kriegsmarine clock will fetch over £2,000. You certainly need to see the movement and the fitting of the dial, and the platform to see if its the genuine one.  That movement shown is modern certainty not from the second W W.

    • I have it, so until we get a lunch one day , nearly everyday is with my mum at the moment.
    • In the meantime whilst awaiting a better plan, please drop me a quick hello on my email.
    • I looked at it like this, I've built a lot of stuff in my time, building structures and furniture, those are my creations and they will still be here way way after I'm gone. Traditional watchmakers felt the need to pass their knowledge on, ideas that they created . I assume with them as it is with me, leaving their mark on the earth, a way of being remembered. This creation of Mark's has brought thousands of people together to pass their knowledge around,  ideas that will continue to be used for lifetimes. Ideas that should continue to be procured. If for whatever reason the forum ceased to exist, not quite like Ranfft's, that didn't disappear but much less usable. Then that is sad, such a massive loss of communication between good people and a wealth of knowledge lost. There should be something in place for when that happens which could be next week, next year or in 10 years. Might not be a topical subject for a lot of folk or boardering on controversy, i did say i talk about stuff other people dont. But if you dont talk about it and something happens then you've lost it and you ain't gonna fix it .
    • I've remained silent on this thread, and at the risk of upsetting everyone, the thing that worries me the most the the apparent absence of Mark. The moderators do a great job and the members also pitch in, and the site seems to run itself, but it is a concern for the future of this forum when the owner is absent for all intents and purposes. Like many of the comments above I would hate to log in one day and things be closed down as I rely on this site for ideas and knowledge and also cheer me up. maybe the Moderators could reach out to him, assuming he does not read this thread, and express our concerns and let us know the plans going forward? some kind of WRT ark
    • That was the exact reason for me starting this thread watchie. Still we haven't worked out how the regulars are going to hook up if it goes tits up. I honestly think something should be arranged to stay in contact, we all help each other so much.
