Accutron 4th wheel

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!  So I've picked up a Accutron 214 non runner and decided to have a go at servicing it to see if I can bring it back to life.  I own a few accutrons but have never gone this far into one before.  So after cleaning and inspection I have found the 4th wheel has some damage.  Doing a little research, it looks as though the 214 and 218 4th wheels have the same part number.  Before ordering one for a 218, I was just wondering if anyone can confirm that they are the same?

One of the things you have to be careful about is part numbers for watches. Up until the relative recent times the part numbers refer to a part? For instance I'm attaching a page out of the bestfit book notice they reference the Swiss part numbering system. So simplistically you have a name for a part or a number for that part. But like balance wheel doesn't tell you which watch it belongs to or fourth wheel doesn't tell you which watch of lungs to even though they both have the exact same part number which is basically the same as a part name. With much much newer watches they have unique numbers for every single part but previously it's a name or number referring to the part and you still need what it goes to otherwise it's not going to be right.

Then I have a link that lists the parts for the 214. If you click on the actual part ill give you the cross reference. Clicking on the fourth wheel we get the second link which shows that it only cross references to other 214's.

    • I have 2 of these movements. I just put together the good one, with a couple of bits from the other. It's running ok considering the mainspring is very tired! They both have identical main springs, so I presume they are the 100 year old originals. I don't know what the movement is, no markings. The spring is 1.6mm high, 0.15mm thick, 280mm long. Barrel is 11.5mm diameter and the arbor is 3.7mm. I can't find anything that seems even close enough to have a stab at. It looks like I might have to go down on thickness and up on length. 1.6, 0.135, 340, 11 maybe? The same is available in 0.14 too. Which would work better with the extra 60mm length? I don't know what the arbor loop size is on these though, they are gr4577 and gr4588 I can go 0.13 300 to, gr4562. None of them jump out at me as ideal though. How far from spec can you get away with?
    • Welcome to the forum. Only chance would be the likes of eBay but as you probably already know they aren't cheap. What's wrong with it? Edit Is it just the broken battery tab and missing insulator?
    • Great! I like to have a working plan that I can execute with the tools at my disposal (though I really do love cool tools, and may acquire more in the future). Regarding the 0.15mm, I'm certain I'll be able to judge the difference between 0 and something (i.e., if the pivot at least sticks out of the hole jewel). Beyond that, no guarantees. 😂  The great thing is, I have one donor movement with a pivot that's heavily worn if not just sheared off on the top end, so I'll be able to try things out with that. I might even be able to cannibalize the hole jewel if it's original.   Sincerely praying that I don't have to buy more Moebius lubricants. 😁
    • As currently implemented, possibly never. The problem is that we don't actually fully understand how organic life forms "understand", so it is difficult to define understanding in the context of anything else, including AI, however current AI does not work the way most people think it does, and certainly does not work the same way the human brain for example works.  By that definition, it will never understand. That is not to say that we will never be able to make a system that is truly self aware, and  genuinely understands its own existence. AI is however, not that system.
