Bizarre day date change

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone and hope everyone is OK. bought this watch in a joblot for a tenner (£10.00) so no complaints. The watch works fine but the date changes an hour forward every 24 hours. So if I cycle through the watch and it changes at 12, the next cycle it will be 1am, the next 2am etc. I also removed the hands, cycled the watch to the precise time of date change and then replaced the hands at the 12 O'clock position but the date started to change at the half past position with the same problem as above. The hands sit fine and are snug. Any ideas on what is going on? Many thanks and kind regards.

Pedro.

Just so I understand clearly first it's an hour off then you reposition the hands it's one half hour off?

As it's the calendar parts shall have to take the hands and dial off and see what's going on.

Then it's hard to go beyond this because which movement is this? But we could guess if the hands are actually tracking it's probably not a Canon opinion the problem perhaps. That takes us back to something to do with the the calendar parts which are under the dial unfortunately. Then we can't even look for a tech sheet if one even exists without a movement identification. But more likely have the watch hasn't been serviced in a long time that needs to be done.

Sounds like an interesting symtom, is it falling exactly 1 hour behind with every daychange or what?
A guess with that day date 70's model it would house an 718 movement.

Hi, yes it is a 718 movement. Never come across this problem before. The watch is keeping great time but every day the date change changes an hour forward so one day will change at say 1am, the next 2am and so forth

Had to take a look how one of these loooked like, just happened to have a ORIS Twin Date lying around.

The day date share the same disk for the day date change which is driven through some gears by the hour wheel.
The hour wheel as you know is driven by the small pinion on the minute wheel, and the minute wheel is driven by the cannon pinion. This configuration should ensure the change of time and date to be synchronised by the time.
So if the day date would be affected by the cannon pinion I would expect the time to be off too (check if the time slipps too). So if the time isn't affected this leaves us to the day and date disks, they either got loose from their gears or the day date jumpers are not correctly aligned.

Cheers, the movement you have posted is identical to mine. As I am writing this the watch is still keeping excellent time but will keep an eye on it. Will have a look tomorrow and keep you posted, many thanks for your time, effort and advice, it is much appreciated.

Kind regards

Pedro.

    • in general this shouldn't be any change. but in general questions like this it be nice to know the specifics of the watch in other words how was it performing before it was cased up and what is it doing now.
    • just as a reminder this watch is a Swatch group product. This will bring up a problem like spare parts and technical information. that I found some links to some information on when I talk about your watch and some of the technical and basically your watch is equivalent to 2834-2 for which I'm attaching the technical sheets. But equivalent does not mean exactly the same you want to do a search on the group for C07 as we discussed this watch before including the technical differences how it's supposed to be regulated and basically because it's watch group there is no parts availability. https://calibercorner.com/eta-caliber-c07-xxx/   https://www.chrono24.com/magazine/eta-movements-from-the-2824-2-to-the-powermatic-80-p_80840/ https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/h-10-movement-details.4636991/ eta CT_2834-2_FDE_481857_15.pdf
    • people be honest.... Swatch is evil for the watchmakers and repairers, BUT not everything in watches from Switzerland is from the Swatch-Group. As far as i know, Selitta got sacked by Swatch as a Movement-Assembler for them and they started to produce Movements in their own Name with slight Modifications. As far as i know, they sell Parts to the Market for their Movements. In most cases, if a ETA-Movement fails, it is a valid Option to replace it with a Selitta Movement, which i consider the Solution for this Mess with the Swatch-Group...... I have no Connection to anybody at Selitta, but being a Swiss-Guy, i still like to have Swiss-Made Watches, but not from the Swatch-Group.   ok ? regards, Ernst
    • Just one more greedy act by Swatch. They started a number of years ago here in the US..cutting off supplies to watchmakers that could build complications that many Swatch houses couldn't even touch. Old school masters who had gone through some of the most prestigious houses in the world. Otto Frei has some statements on their page about it. I tell all my customers to avoid new Swiss watches like the plague,..unless they just want an older one in their collection that still has some parts out on the market, or they have really deep pockets and don't mind waiting months and paying through the nose to get it back. Plenty of others to choose from..IE Seiko,..or other non-swiss brands Even a number of Chinese brands are catching up with the Swiss,..and I think that in time, their actions will be their downfall
    • Yes. If that's not what you are experiencing...start looking for something rubbing. A 1st guess is that one of the hands is rubbing against the hole in the center of the dial. Especially if you now have lower amplitude in face up/ face down positions.
