http no longer redirecting to https

Recommended Posts

A few days ago the URL with http stopped redirecting.  It used to be that if you went to http://www.watchrepairtalk.com/ it would automatically redirect to (notice the "s") https://www.watchrepairtalk.com/ which is the proper site.  Due to browsers now hiding the http part of the URL, one wouldn't even notice this.

Except this stopped a few days ago, and now the http site demands a username/password for any access.  I thought it was down, as all my bookmarks and browser recent site history happened to have http URLs.  But then I guessed what it might be wrong and found my way back.

Some sort of misconfiguration of the virtual server for port 80, so it's no longer responding with a 301 redirect.  Maybe http basic auth was added and it's required before the server can respond with the redirect?
