Magnifying visors: eyes crossed!

Ok. I understand now. That "toe-in" angle is called the convergence angle.

The visor loupe that I have has a built in convergence angle. Even though the two lenses appear flat, if you look at the left and right edges of the lens, they are thicker than the middle where the lenses meet.

But then, with a simple, non-adjustable setup like this, it doesn't suit everyone. If you are lucky and the distance between  your eyes (inter pupillary distance) is the same as that of the visor, then all is good.

Even if you get an expensive surgical binocular loupe, you have to adjust the inter pupillary distance to suit you. And in my case, even the convergence angle didn't suit me. After using it for five years, squinting through slightly skewed lenses, I decided to do what the factory warned against doing. I loosened the lock screws and set my own convergence angle. And I have been using them for the last fifteen years.

Thanks for filling the gap in my vocabulary. The visor I got has no convergence angle. I imagine you're meant to adjust the pupilary distance by moving the lens set in/out, but with no angle at all, no amount of in/out will get the job done.

I had a cheap Chinese made visor before I had to wear glasses.  It was never any good.  I got a Donegan Optivisor and it is worlds better.  It gets a little weird with progressive lenses in my glasses but I have it figured out now.  I don't know how they correct for pupil distance and convergence but they do.  It's their secret sauce.

An Optivisor that ships from China is going to be a cheap fake.  Find a source for the true Made In USA one.

I saw Donegan on Amazon and it shows that it ships from China. If you look at the seller detail you find this, very suspicious. I’m buying mine from Esslinger. It costs more but at least you know what you’re getting.

I took the plunge and ordered a Donegan Optivisor from Cousins - I also got the loupe thing that goes with it in a mad moment of buying frenzy! I now have a little buyers remorse, does anyone have any experience with the loupe thing.... did I just waste my cash 😟

Here is what I am talking about:

I have one of these.

I use reading glasses 1.5 and the two lenses 2.5 and 3.5 for normal work. I use the loupe for fine work. So that I can see effectively, I have inserted a black piece of board in-between the lenses that allow the view for the left eye. Using the sight of my right eye means I do not have double vision.

I've tried a few (3) different optivisors now, and none of them worked for me even a little. I stepped up to a stereo microscope and THAT is the ticket.

Me neither, the lenses on my visor make me feel woosey. I use +4 reading specs, sometimes through a bench magnifying glass for genral work then a couple of scopes for more detailed work.

My optivisor has arrived and I've tried it on and it's much lighter than my previous one, but I haven't tried it for a prolonged time yet as I am changing my workshop configuration and it's in no condition to do a watch at the moment. Will give full feedback when I've given it a real try. I used a visor almost from day 1, so I suppose I am used to it, but my previous one had lights on it, which seemed like a great idea, but after an hour+++ of wearing it the weight from the light and batteries felt like I was wearing a housebrick on my head, so hopefully this much lighter version will be much less fatiguing over prolonged use.

Scott

I wear the housebrick (Magnifying Glass Loupe LED Light Adjustable Headband Visor Magnifier Loupe - 3rd reply above).  For me though, many is the time I do not notice having it on. I put in on just after I have placed the watch in my component tray in the working box. I always use the LED, relying on rechargeable batteries.

I think my head is thicker than yours. No headaches. Except for trying to get better amplitude.
