Thanks very much!

I think the hook may be way past being able to be dressed by filing but I'll have a look.

The annealing process might be an obstacle to me adding a pin, but we'll see.

I appreciate your help, thanks.

I finally managed to remove the cannon pinion. I soaked in oil for a day but that didn't work so then I soaked it in WD40 and that did the trick. It appears that the steel shaft had some rust on it which must be why it didn't come off easily.

On different note, do you think the hook on this barrel arbor is retrievable? To me, it doesn't look as bad as I first thought.

Have you tried the spring on it if so what does it look like and will it hold. You don't want to start fiddling with it if it will hold.  I must say looking at it under magnification it doesn't look good.

It does have a really peculiar look like it was very very poorly made perhaps. The thing to do is to put the spring back in try it and see if it's going to work at all before you try to file or do anything with it. We might be surprised it actually works or maybe that just putting a proper edge on the hook might work if you're lucky.

Well, it didn't hold so I tried filing the end of the 'hook' with a triangular file. It seems it might have worked although I need to test it properly in the movement or with a pin vice.

I will order a new mainspring. The existing one is 1.4 x 0.15 x 380 but I can only find a replacement that is 400mm long. Would this matter very much? The barrel is 12.3mm in diameter.

Providing the other dimensions are correct that extra Length will not be the end of the world.  The most critical is the width because that determines whether it's even to fit in the barrel or not. The thickness is how strong the spring is this becomes interesting because the original if it was blued steel versus the modern the modern will be stronger for the same thickness supposedly in another discussion group somebody told me as totally wrong on that one but seems to whatever one thinks. Then the link could be shorter or longer it would affect the running time of the gets dramatically too long Or two short but it have to be quite a bit.

Back to one of the original reasons for this thread - the need for a cannon pinion to fit this watch:

I obtained a movement that was very similar but not similar enough (see warning in earlier post by oldhippy 'they look the same but there is always something wrong')!
The cannon pinion in this replacement movement is slightly shorter but the pinion meshes nicely with the wheels and the existing hour wheel will still work nicely.

However, the diameter of the centre hole is slightly smaller than it should be to fit on the existing pinion shaft. Now, I need to use the existing shaft because the minute hand needs to fit properly. Is it viable to ream the hole in the new pinion so it fits the old shaft?

    • Unfortunately I'm not that lucky. I started on the train side and after I noticed the binding I pulled everything out except the driving wheel to rule everything else out. It still binds. I'm going to double check that the pinion is fully seated on the staff first, then if no joy I'll push the bridge jewel up a fraction of a mm. Fingers crossed!
    • Happy to have helped, great way to start the day with a win! 🥳
    • Thank you for the advise!! It worked. The setting screw was a lock/unlock to remove the rotor.
    • I have that French tech sheet too, it is a little different than the English one (eg, it doesn't have the auto works diagram). BTW, it looks like you are looking up the case number in the 1979 ABC supplement. The 1974 ABC catalog does have the 3093 case. As you determined it takes the 1222-5 crystal.  When I serviced my President 'A' (which also takes that crystal), I was able to fit a 29.8 crystal from my DPA crystal assortment. Those are, in my opinion, a great deal. The assortment comes with 10 sizes each from 27.8mm to 32.4mm in 0.2 increments. I pretty much use them for any non-armored crystal that takes a high dome crystal. I think they no longer make them but Cousins has still has some in stock but when I bought them they were around $40 for the set and now they are around $100. Still, at 40 cents a crystal it's still a good deal. For the large driving wheel, I remember I once assembled the keyless/motion works first and when I placed the large driving wheel it was interfering with the setting wheel on the dial side as the teeth were not fully meshing and it wouldn't fully seat. If that isn't the issue I got nothing and am looking forward to see how you solve it 🙂
    • Not sure, but just looking at it, it seems like the screw on the right may be a fake? The one on the left may not be a screw in the regular sense at all, rather a 2 position device, I think you need to point the slot towards either of the 2 dots and one will secure and one will open. Like I said this is just my best guess looking at the pictures.
