New member w/rust surprise

Recommended Posts

Finished Mark's second course, looking forward to 3rd.  Not sure if I'm obsessed more with movements & tools or Mark's videos. ?

Have a few projects in flight right now; learning many things, mainly what not to do! (removing springs without securing them, not taking enough pictures, being impatient/in a hurry, etc.)

Disassembled & cleaned 50's ETA 1256 in ultrasonic bath, rinsed in plain water and laid out to dry.  First time cleaning a movement.  Most of the parts & screws now have what appears to be surface rust which was not there prior to cleaning.  I'm thinking maybe this is related to not actively drying the parts quickly or maybe the cleaning solution (came with the cleaner) or maybe rinsing with just water?

Is there a simple/easy way to fix?  (ie., soak them in a different solution/actively dry?)

Any insights greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Best, John.

Hello John  rinsing with clear water, distilled or not and air drying is most likely the cause, best to final rinse in isopropyl Alcohol and dry with gentle heat, a hairdryer or the like. that way no water remains on the surface. Other members will have other ideas and other methods which they personally use and will all be valid so the choice will be yours.

Oh goodness, all you need for a delux rust is water.

With the exception of the fork and balance wheel I give everything else a bath in lighter fluid IN ULTRASONIC.

Stick the fork pivots into pegwood or tooth pick( turn the tooth pick) peg them pallet jewels and brush the rest of the fork with a bit of lighter fluid.  The fork should not spend but a few seconds in lighter fluid.

A quick bath( NOT IN ULTRASONIC ) wount  hurt the balance complete.

Good luck pal
