Old Elgin pocket watch

So I have been gifted a old Elgin pocket watch that was purchased in between 1920-1940’s and in looking for to find any information about this watch. It doesn’t have a way to open the back without damaging it. Has anyone worked with one of these or can send me information of someone that can help me out with this. Please.

Hello and welcome to the forum.   Have a look round the edge for any dimple of marks of previous entry, check where the stem tube fit the case there may be a slot there.

Actually there is a dimple one and the front side and another on the boat side, but I don’t have the tools to open it without possibly damaging the watch. Any idea what what I can do?

I insert a safety razor blade into the seam where the dimple is, open a gap, work your way around the case to widen the gap enough so you can use a utility knife to crack it open.

Hi  Follow what Joe has suggested but be very careful, wear a glove if it looks as if its a bit tight in case of slippage.

Once it's open, and you can read the serial number on the movement, google the "Pocket Watch Database" to type in the maker and serial number and you will learn loads about it.  The Ranfft Bidfun archives are another useful resource.
