My first disassembly

Kobus

Recommended Posts

Broken movement from local supplies shop.

Unfortunately a date complication.

ID help.

1. I assume I have the minute and hour wheel correct.

2. What would the ?1 wheel be? Something to do with the date operation?

3. Have never seen this "clip" thingy at ?2.

4. What in here makes the date wheel advance?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaking, #2 is the date jumper (the thing that keeps the date ring aligned correctly).

#1 might have something attached to the bottom, that in turn pushes what I circled below, that in turn makes the date wheel advance. (sorry I don't know all the names of these parts ?)

If we go with your title of first disassembly that it's easy just take every single screw out all the parts will fall off and it will be disassembled.

If this is you learning watch repair then it would be helpful to give us something. Did ypu notice that mikepilk Has asked you two separate questions that we still Do not have an answer for? To be blunt he's asking who made this watch because it would be helpful for us to help you if we knew that. Contrary to popular belief we haven't all memorized every single watch in the universe. Or it may be possible we get technical sheets which would give us a clue what some of these parts are.

It's usually best for first disassembly to start with something like a clone of the 6497. Less things to worry about and help is available in the form of all kinds of technical and other documentation.

What I have learned (heard about before) with the first disassembly is:

Parts DO go flying around much easier than I thought, and they are much smaller than I thought. If you have a carpet you can loose a part.

For me it would be totally impossible to reassemble without plenty of pics and some notes maybe. Not difficult, impossible.

Hi yuo will find some data on your watch on this link      http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi?10&ranfft&0&2uswk&AS_1791.

What is nice about the above link is we find out that the 1791 is very similar to the 1691 other than frequency. In other words one is running at 18,000 and the other 21,600. So everything else should be the same except the balance wheel and maybe some minor changes the gear train.

As I have the 1691 series parts list I'm attaching that.

This is why for first time disassembly or practicing the 6497/98 or its clones from China because are cheap are usually the preferred watch the start with. The parts are little bit bigger technical documentation Is available versus starting with older watch where all your money get is a parts list if you're really really lucky.

On the other hand not having a lead helpful information you grasp the importance of pictures. Often overlooked by all of us from time to time.

    • I'd be grateful for recommendations of good sources of advice on getting clocks with balance spring - as opposed to pendulum - escapements 'in beat'.....
    • Well I am in a bit of a quandary. I can't find the correct colour for the dial. I even wrote to Hettich a while back hoping they would give me the colour code for the dial. The reply that I received was "We don't make those anymore." I am thinking now to silver the dial and use a water transfer decal to put minute markers and the HETTICH logo (which is the very font that this forum uses) and the Made in Germany down the bottom. Not sure of the success rate of the water transfer method, but I have no other solution for the markers and logo. Handpainting is just not an option. In trying to get the top piece of the clock polished, it has progressively lost its sharp edges. My stupid hamfisted effort. I am thinking of purchasing a replacement piece of brass and drilling new holes in it for the corner posts. Why I attempted to repolish using wet & dry and not simply using a paint remover to remove the old lacquer from the brass, I don't know. You whistle and I'll point at the idiot. I also need to purchase some sheet spring steel as the two small ratchet springs that arrest the wheel that supports the weight after it is lifted by the electromagnet are worn. The two from the donor clock that I purchased are worse. I am hoping that I will be able to manufacture new springs without having to fiddle about with tempering etc to the steel. I have some ideas on that front. How many things until the clock is no longer the original? Like an axe. Heard a woodchopper on tv once saying that he had replaced the head on his axe twice and the handle three times, but it was the same axe that he began woodchopping with. 😉
    • I use the exact OD and it fits in with a little force and a pleasing 'click' so it's snug and wont rotate within the holder, but that depends on how you have set up and calibrated your printer so you may need to play with the settings/dimensions a little to allow for any discrepancies in your printer calibration. PS I just finished (2 days ago) a new revision which automatically prints the movement OD on the bottom of the holder, I'll see if I can upload it here Here is rev 4 remember to change the .pdf to .FCStd so it will open in FreeCAD - also you may need to install the LiberationSansBold font and tell FreeCAD where it lives on your PC, or change the font to something you already have on your system. • Hi, guys I'm very interested in printing out this design as I've seen the orignals used on many occasions and I'm fed up with my movements popping out the standard Bergeon type so want to give this type a go 😀  As I've never used this type before should the movement be a snug fit in the holder? Once you've measured the diameter of the movement do you put this exact value in the spreadsheet or increase it a little 🤔 Comments would be appreciated 👍
