Yes, the capacitor which I had on hand is overrated, by how much I can't say. But the Zapper works really well and I'm not going to change it.

No worries man, I was just pointing out why your circuit was cooking resistors initially. I'm sure it works well after making the changes required based on the parts you had on hand.

The cheap Chinese blue ones get bloody hot after a couple of repeat uses.

I think the real cheap ones don't even use basic rectification, they're just a simple inductor with one primary that's saturated as well. That's why they get warm and burn out after continuous use. It works for it's purpose but they're made as cheap and basic as possible.

Why don't you just buy one that's recommended by watch tool suppliers. That way you know its safe to use on watch movements, or am I missing the point.

Of course one can do that, but there are also some who don't mind another challenge. For me watch repair is not just about repairing watches, it's the whole journey with the different challenges on its path 🙂

By all means, if you feel more comfortable in buying, please do so 😉

That's exactly it. Taking up a hobby is usually a rabbit hole into other things that you'd never think you'd go down. For me this hobby has taught me metal finishing/restoration, electroplating and videography. None of which I initially thought had anything to do with watchmaking.
