Miyota 6M02 date not advancing

Just purchased a new Miyota 6M02 for a Citizen replacement. Day and date both set correctly using the stem in the first click position. The day and date do not advance when rotating the hands through 24 hours using the stem in the second click position. I've never encountered this before in all my years of replacing movements. Is there some trick peculiar to this movement that I am missing?

Does the calendar wheel rotate with the day and date finger on when you turn the crown in second position? You will have to remove day disc to see this.

It is a new movement and I do not want to tear it down to check that. I will probably return it and get another. I have just never seen this behavior in a new unit. I wonder if it was returned before and put back on the shelf. This is a common problem that surfaces as the calendar parts wear out. Very inexpensive (cheap) plastic.
