Cannon Pinion Help!

Recommended Posts

hello guys, been a while but I have a movement that is really starting to get the best of me. problem after problem then finally when i got it all together and thinks its good to go I realize the hands are not moving even though watch is ticking away......now I know what your gunna say "loose cannon pinion" well no if anything its seems too tight. Its stiff when changing time from the crown, i checked each wheel separately and doesnt seem to be any binding until i put the canon pinion and the wheel that moves the canon pinion from the stem (whatever that wheel is called drawing a blank). I really dont get it, I have tried it with 4 other pinions and still no dice. I dont see how a tight cannon pinion would stop the time from advancing. iam thinking about replacing the center wheel but not sure what that will do since i tested the train before installing the pallet fork and balance and its as smooth as ice. BTW its a waltham 1907 7 jewel 0s movement. any ideas.

I don't suppose you're trying to run the watch like you normally would without the case?

This is where it be helpful to have a picture for everybody not familiar with American pocket watches? a problem with American pocket watches is, when the movement is out of the case the case has the crown and stem. The movement then goes into setting and if you try to run the watch out of the case in the setting position it doesn't always run. Sometimes the run fine but they're still driving all the setting mechanism.

Later on the watch companies grasping that they had a problem put a variety of ways to put the watch basically into a service mode which is basically put it back into a winding position out of the case. I could make a variety of gases where it is but it be helpful if you give us a picture or several. Like a side picture where the stem goes and would be helpful and the front and the back.

then as it's an American pocket watch and they have parts manuals showing all the parts just because they exist swapping them is not a good idea. The catalog may show interchangeability but often times the parts were fit for that particular watch. So if you start swapping parts you can end up with all kinds of interesting and strange issues. Always best if you can keep the original parts with the original watch.

Obviously, cannon pinion is not your problem. Please read JohnR725's comment above. In particular his "without the case" point. I do not know if you actually have the watch case, and if you do, did you alter the Sleeve (removed it for cleaning, etc?). That could be a part of the problem also and you need to simply adjust it.

    • So here is the new base (v 2.1), I made it so that the base will fit over and swallow the stump of the hand pusher tool (or at least my clone of the tool), I also reduced the OD of the bottom skirt a little as it looked/felt a little large, here are a few pictures and the fake .pdf file which you need to convert to .zip once downloaded.   The cut-out seen on the below image on the bottom of the base should swallow the OD (40 mm, +0.1 mm tolerance) of the stump and the height of the stump 9.5mm (measured to 9.1mm, but rounded to 9.5mm) - let me know if this works for your tool.   Note, I think you may need to print supports for the new internal shelf created? Here is the fake .pdf for just the FreeCAD base file and 3mf files Modular Movement Holder.pdf Here is the fake pdf for complete set of the new base and ring FreeCAD/3mf files: Modular Movement Holder base and ring v 2.1.pdf
    • Hi Frank, you have dived headlong into the deep end. Hairspring work has to be the scariest thing a newbie has to tackle. Your hairspring appears to be bent and just putting it back into the regulator would not allow the balance to work properly. It might start oscillating but the performance would not be good. The proper thing to do is to unstud the hairspring, remove the hairspring from the balance, reinstall the hairspring on the stud carrier, reshape the endcurve and centre the collet to the balance jewel hole. This challenge would either make you or break you. Hope that you will be able to fix your watch. Welcome to the world of watchmaking.  Watch this video. It think it'll give you an idea of the task ahead. From your 1st photo, I think you have a etachron type stud. Let me see if I can find a video on how to remove it from the arm.
    • Have read of the Tech Sheet attached on the balance section page 12. It may be bent but until you reposition it back in the regulator pins you'll never know. Cheers CJ 4R35B_4R36A.pdf
    • Aloha All, My Seiko 4R35B movement stopped working today. Upon closer inspection, it looks like the balance spring came out of the regulator pin. This is my first time working on a balance. Any advice on how to get this spring repositioned (back to normal)? I'm pretty sure that while adjusting the beat error on this movement, I must have turned the stud (I didn't even know they turned), and the spring eventually fell out.  Will the spring go back to even spacing when it's back in the pin, or does it look bent? Thanks, Frank
    • Good job, that band matches the watch perfectly.
