Seiko 5 Cal.7009A Lube And Crown Function Advice Please

Could I ask for a little help please,

I'm looking at a pdf of a movement I'm learning on, and am hoping someone can tell me the equivalents of these oils listed:

Mobius A

Seiko oil S-4

Seiko oil S-6

I have at my disposal:  Mobius: 8300, 9010, 9104, 9415

Also... before disassembling the watch; the crown would not wind the main spring and there seemed no day of the week advance on the crown either. simply 2 positions. date advance and time adjust.

I could see nothing broken or missing inside and am now thinking, perhaps that's as it was made. It had an auto wind mech. so perhaps Seiko decided it wouldn't need hand winding???

Am I very much mistaken?

many thanks

Tim

Most Seiko auto's until recently were just that - auto's, no way to hand wind. Just give it a gentle side to side shake for a short while and its good to go. The day will need to be set by turning the hands between 10 pm & 2 am until the day is selected.

Hi Tim,

I don't know what the Meobius equivalents are for the Seiko oils but what you've got will certainly work.

I would use the 8300 on the main spring (very thin wipe over the spring before reinstalling into the barrel), the keyless works, and the canon pinion, 9104 (or HP1300) on the low speed high torque pivots like the barrel arbor pivots and centre wheel, 9010 on the higher speed lower torque pivots (basically everything else but don't oil the pallet fork pivots), and the 9415 on the pallet stones. You should also use a braking grease (something like 8213) on the barrel walls before installing the main spring, other than that you should be good to go.

Other opinions will differ.

The 7009, like many of the Seiko calibres found in the 5's doesn't have manual winding, it is an auto only but the winding efficiency is very good and it shouldn't take too much movement to get it running. Also the quick set for the day I believe is by pushing the crown in, it advances 1 day for each push.

I'm sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Agree with lubes.

If its like a 6139 which I serviced recently then the quick set is Push crown fully in to advance day; push crown in to 1st posn to advance date.

The autowind system is very good but you can wind the mainspring up a bit quicker by turning the screw holding the winding gear to the barrel.  This is accessible via a hole in the plate.  Turn it slowly (to avoid overworking the autowind pawls and click) with the widest screwdriver than fits until it gets to feel quite tight (don't overdo it as you may damage the screw slot or overtighten the screw and break it !). The autowind will then have less to do. Useful if you want to regulate right away.

    • I have it, so until we get a lunch one day , nearly everyday is with my mum at the moment.
    • In the meantime whilst awaiting a better plan, please drop me a quick hello on my email.
    • I looked at it like this, I've built a lot of stuff in my time, building structures and furniture, those are my creations and they will still be here way way after I'm gone. Traditional watchmakers felt the need to pass their knowledge on, ideas that they created . I assume with them as it is with me, leaving their mark on the earth, a way of being remembered. This creation of Mark's has brought thousands of people together to pass their knowledge around,  ideas that will continue to be used for lifetimes. Ideas that should continue to be procured. If for whatever reason the forum ceased to exist, not quite like Ranfft's, that didn't disappear but much less usable. Then that is sad, such a massive loss of communication between good people and a wealth of knowledge lost. There should be something in place for when that happens which could be next week, next year or in 10 years. Might not be a topical subject for a lot of folk or boardering on controversy, i did say i talk about stuff other people dont. But if you dont talk about it and something happens then you've lost it and you ain't gonna fix it .
    • I've remained silent on this thread, and at the risk of upsetting everyone, the thing that worries me the most the the apparent absence of Mark. The moderators do a great job and the members also pitch in, and the site seems to run itself, but it is a concern for the future of this forum when the owner is absent for all intents and purposes. Like many of the comments above I would hate to log in one day and things be closed down as I rely on this site for ideas and knowledge and also cheer me up. maybe the Moderators could reach out to him, assuming he does not read this thread, and express our concerns and let us know the plans going forward? some kind of WRT ark
    • That was the exact reason for me starting this thread watchie. Still we haven't worked out how the regulars are going to hook up if it goes tits up. I honestly think something should be arranged to stay in contact, we all help each other so much.
