Tudor rolex half moon mechanism

Hi folks,

 

My friend says that his jeweler says that " the half moon mechanism" in his watch is starting to show signs of wearing out, and needs replacing in due course, so my friend would like to get one. I will attach a pic of the watch. My friend is elderly and is not familiar with computers, and i suspect that his jeweler may also not be very internet savvy. So its my job to try find what he needs. He wasn't able to give me any more info on what he needed, and i am having a bit of trouble finding that. I would appreciate some guidance assistance, please.

Surely it just needs to go to a reputable watch maker for a service, replacing any worn parts? The jeweller sounds like a numpty!

Well, we dont live near very big bustling cities, and my friend says he's the only jeweler around these parts, that is willing to repair and service his watches (an avid watch and clock enthusiast, with many of both).

 

But i see your point, i might have to look online for watchmakers within a couple hours of us. He would like to continue supporting this guy tho, as he's the only guy in our parts willing to work on them, as i said.

Well, he may be a competent at doing the repair and service work, but he needs to improve his communication skills, otherwise you are going to be on a wild goose chase and wasting time and money on parts you don't need.

I'm guessing what he means by "half-moon mechanism" is the automatic winder, maybe just the rotor, maybe the reverser wheels, or whatever is in a Tudor like that. But that is just a guess.

In any case, you are going to need to know the movement i.d. and get an exact description, (in conventional watchmaking terminology) of which parts are worn. Pictures would be good. Then, if you are lucky, someone on here will give you a parts list and part numbers to help your search.

You don't have to live near the watch repairer, I have all servicing jobs that are beyond my skill level done by Rich Askham, who lives a couple of hundred miles from me. Never actually met him but all dealings are done by post using Royal Mail Special Delivery service....

Here's one he did earlier for me....

Beautiful ?. I hear you, honest i do. My friend is oldschool tho, he takes the greatest pleasure in the trip to the jeweler, the one on one chat, the trip back up to get it and the chat when picking it up. 

 

I've since been looking on the internet and found a watch repairer a little further away, and suggested him to my friend. So, as its currently out of our "safe travel" area at the moment due to the virus, we will go up to him once the restrictions are lifted. My friend is excited for the trip up, he has a pocket watch for the guy too, apparently he specialises in them, and the other guy said he couldnt do it.  

 

Also, on reading Klassiker's reply, thats confirmation of what i suspected. I just wont be getting detailed enough descriptions of what i need. So its better to try the guy mentioned above. I suggested posting it, but nope my friend would rather the day out, and personally deliver the item, and know where it is.

      Hi guys, the question is what is a forum, a place for discussion and passing on information, idle chat and a bit of fun and I for one are the richer for it. When in Hospital last year with the Covid being force fed oxygen and feeling total sh1t and close to the pearly gates a daily look on the forum to see what was going down helped to keep me focused on the job in hand took my mind off the problem for a short while but it was a lifeline for sure. We chat to friends for that is what they become around the world read their posts help where we can post information where we can.  I like @Neverenoughwatches some times think of members past and wonder if they are still at the watches or given up, some drop in for advise and drop out again never to be heard of again. The forum reminds me of Yorkshire hospitality, The door is always open and the kettle on the stove. Long may it continue.   My two bobs worth.

      Thanks all.   Movement is a Helvetia 800C. Don't know any history e.g. if the broken mainspring is original. Watch was bought recently as non-working. Really interesting piece that Jon, thanks. I'd only been thinking of length relating to power reserve. I don't have a mainspring winder (yet) so I'd like to avoid winding the spring into the barrel by hand. The old spring measures at 1.60 x .11 x ~290. Sorry, can't be exact on the length. The piece I still have is 275, but the second piece escaped during measurement. Best measurement I had for it was ~13. The micrometer does zero accurately so I'm pretty confident of the .11 Also, I'm getting the barrel ID at 9.5 on a vernier. I'm now wondering about going with a .11 spring? Given all of the above, maybe 1.60 x .11 x 300 x 9? Any thoughts? Cheers.

      Funny that you should bring this up. I was thinking about it just the other day. What happens if something happens to @Mark? The social bit is fantastic and I would miss it dearly, but I worry even more about the content. Together we have created a gold mine of information which would be more or less irreplaceable if the site should disappear. People (often with a lot of knowledge) come and go. I sometimes wonder what happened to them and miss them. We have no idea unless we have some private contact information. When I was new here I saw a lot of posts by @Lawson. He had a true fire in his heart for horology and was asking for an apprenticeship in his signature. I found that very inspiring and often wondered what happened. Is the fire still burning? Did he get an apprenticeship?

      I dont like to give up things that i enjoy Tom.  So my next question is how are we going to prepare for that inevitability and what are we going to do about it. Its not just about funding it but I did pick up on something that Mark said once. It doesnt run on fresh air , what if it becomes a burden or an unnecessary cost or for any other reason that i wont get into. We all know life can change in an instant, my life has been so up and down for about 8 years and was only just beginning to level itself out.
