Eyup Rich how you doin matey ?  Rather nice looking movement. Just did a little research on Orano, not a great deal to be had. Check balance shock for a memorex system, like this. Can you post a clearer picture of the setting please mate.

Don't know for sure but I  think the patent is for the shock system.  Yes it's cased. Not a bad watch at all, not sure what I'm going to do about the dial.

Yep sorry previous page. No hands no crystal ?

Loose stem, doesn't wind.  Remove the stem and tickytocky maybe an easy fix. No hands or crystal but I have a s£%t load of them.

Yesterday's carboot. £20 for a box of used watches.  Well within the 404,the guy did say £14 at one point but i just couldn't take his offer. I do feel as though I'm cheating at 36 watches lol.  Most are fashion, quartz, and ladies and not even worth their proportionally divided cost. But a couple in there worth more the full £20 i paid. An 80s Seiko lcd chrono with original steel bracelet, a new battery was amazed i had one so up and running. A smith 30 min stop watch barely used, a swatchwatch, a talking Radio shack, 3 basic mechanicals, a timex indeglo, a Predator diver a total beast looking of a watch, a map distance calculator, a fake Tag and Rolly, oh and what i suspect might be a 14k  solid gold ladies chalet (no hallmark but stamped 14k, it does look solid ive scratched inside the case back)  weighing 6grams not inc. the movement (i have yet to acid test )

The Chalet has come out on top value wise. It is 14k gold of 6 grams not sure about the gems diamonds and a ruby. Its restoration is  beyond me, It has a hole in each corner of the case and 4 gems missing, a real shame. But all in all a good find at the bottom of a box of watches for 20 quid.I dont expect this to happen very often. Failing in my attempt to get the back off the fake Rolly.

This is the fake Rolex with bracelet to match, quite clearly a fake but that fact not hidden, Hong Kong at the bottom. A very old fake ?

Glued and cramped up. Not my usual item for this sort procedure 🤞. Dying to see what is inside. Shall we take bets anyone ?

First time I've tried this ww. It works a treat after an hour of mild clamping. A great beginners tip. So inside I've found  a Prestige time and co . Hong kong assembled, swiss parts quartz with a german varta battery. I was thinking it would be worse, I'm guessing an old fake 80s ?

I'm starting to work my way through my 404 club purchases from the last few months.

Today we have a Kienzle art deco style pocket watch. Probably from the 1950s, or 1960s, but it could be a little older.

The seconds hand had fallen off, but was still sitting inside, so it didn't require much more than a clean and he hand re-fitting and now it is ticking away nicely, if somewhat loudly.

One movement shot, coming right up.

The movement is a fairly typical Kienzle zero jewelled number. In this case a 146/30

Pretty easy to work on, as at 19.5 ligne its almost an alarm clock.

RIMG0568.thumb.JPG.7933e3cec76e00b45e5f570b0c2906ce.JPG

Also the "mystery engraving" on the inside of the case back. I'm pretty sure that is not the date that it was manufactured.

Art deco 👍. One of my favourite eras, is that something art decoey attached to  the fob chain ?

Not really, its just a small, chromed engine turned round button. I don't think the chain is original to the watch, as the plating on it is unworn, but the plating on the watch is fairly heavily worn.

Bit extravagant for a service date . Very strange ?

A gift date when it was passed down a generation.? Or more likely a passing away date of the original owner. Certainly put there to commemorate something, would have expected a name as well though ?

In between dodging rain showers while pretending to work working very hard in the garden, and emptying out a bunch of junk and cardboard boxes in the attic (to make way no doubt for more boxes and junk), I had a little spare time to work on this much neglected specimen.

A Remontoir pocket watch.

This was very much a 404 club purchase, as it was also completely filthy, so much so that the case had developed some interesting green marks. The brass polished up rather nicely and I'm almost tempted to lacquer it to save me the trouble of having to clean it again in the future.

The inside surfaces of the case appear to be gold plated, or at the very least have a coppery gold appearance.

RIMG0570.thumb.JPG.70743104a1863cfa822aca6ecf3ae842.JPG

Filthy, with a face held together with ancient stick tape. Just my kind of basket case.

RIMG0573.thumb.JPG.cfa728e853dfcd5a0139c3cc809cbcae.JPG

It didn't actually require much effort to make it go, as even before I cleaned and lubricated it, it was trying its best to run.

The calibre is more Timex then Tissot certainly, and it has a tick like a woodpecker, but it actually keeps pretty god time, despite its forlorn fizzog.

I have a slight dilemma however. Should I replace the paper dial with a modern copy from a digital photo, photo shopped and cleaned up, but based as closely as possible on the original and printed with precise 21st century technology, or should I keep it as is? What are everyone's thoughts. Keep, or replace?

Its lovely to see the patination of anything old, showing its age and its history. But unless it is anything of any significance i dont see the harm in making your mark on it. Besides you can always keep the original dial and swap it out again if you ever wanted or needed to. How about having the original alongside your version inside the case front as its a full hunter.

    • If frank says these bombè jewels are for balances and similar pivots then they are used cupped side facing the pivot and then capped i assume. In Nicklesilver's reply i guess that cup can also be reversed and used as an oil reservoir leaving the shoulder riding on a less frictioned domed surface. 🤷‍♂️ Hence the use of them on wheels closer to the escapement that have less torque requiring efforts to reduce friction and are also uncapped.
    • Looks that way, if it had any amount of significant jewel count it would say so on the dial.    Looks that way, if it had any amount of significant jewel count it would say so on the dial.  Same answer as Mike regarding the dial, its often just a slapped on name of a retailer but i thought you were way above this understanding Pete ?
    • Light naptha is what you need to be looking for. The carbon to hydrogen ratio is high with heavy naptha, it doesn't evaporate as well as light naptha and is prone to leaving more residue. Try tom's suggestion of the mirror test.
    • Its a big item Michael and a lot that could go wrong with the process of getting it to its new location. I once helped install one of these units into a conservatory that i had built. It was big and bloody heavy and took six of us to get it in safely. If you have sliding doors and you need to remove the whole frame then that may or may not go well. But i would advise getting a professional in if you have little knowledge on the installation of them. The glazing of the doors could well be 6mm laminated glass which again will be heavy very heavy if the glazing units are big. The glass would also need to be set up and packed correctly to open the doors properly more so if they are unframed and the sliders are upvc. Seems a shame but if no one is biting and that may be due to having no warranty i guess the only takers might be someone that installs them for a living and knows how to repair. If its fibreglass just be careful, i sometimes have to cut fibreglass baths out and they are nasty to work with . Thick gloves are definitely recommended,  not fun picking out fibreglass spells two days later that have started to go septic. Good luck with it all matey.
    • I don’t know anything about this product, however assuming you have it if you put a drop on a mirror or piece of glass lying flat on a table and leave it to evaporate if it leaves any sort of residue it is not really suitable for watch part cleaning.   Tom
