1972 9K Gold Avia

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This is my first "modern" service - as I said in my hello message, I've always worked on antiques but this watch was presented to my grandad on his retirement in 1972. It then passed to me when my own father died some 15yrs ago. I had it serviced by a professional when I was given it, as at that stage my horology hobby had not started and I wouldn't have known a centre wheel from a chocolate eclair.

It recently stopped running and I mistakenly thought it ought to be straightforward to service....in some respects it was in that the techniques of cleaning & oiling I was familiar with but it was a whole new ballgame - for example, I'd never seen a calendar wheel before and it was more complicated than I expected!

Success though, it's running fine now thankfully (in fact I'm wearing it as I write this!). I was not aware of this fantastic website until yesterday so these photos are not so much a proper service journey but are the ones I always take when working on a new movement so I can remember where everything goes!

You're well on your way with watch repairing having just serviced that one David. The style reminds me of a solid gold Smiths Astral that I worked on earlier in the year. Many thanks for joining in and posting, it's what makes this place special. :)

Thanks!

Yesterday I bought a Ladies Raymond Weil mechanical on eBay for the princely sum of £10....description said "not working" so I've no idea what lies in store when it arrives...but at least spares ought to be available if needed....I'll post the outcome   :)
