2 years collecting timex (1950s to 1970s)

Recommended Posts

hi guys, my obsession is early Timex watches from the 1950s, 60s and 70s with a particular focus on 1976 birth year watches, Dundee made pieces and early 50s pieces.

what attracts me to Timex is how disposable they were and how they shouldn't have lasted as long as they should. there's a UK connection and a wide range of mechanical pieces produced in 1976 when the quartz crisis was at its height.

unfortunately i have the money but not the time to restore many of these pieces so for now stick with m24 (no date) restorations with others being helped out by the timex community on fb and ig. (@timetrope)

my current challenge is getting date wheels on m25 movements back on. theyre tricky. and getting crowns to stay in place on m21/22 movements which im hoping some new antimagnetic tweezers will help with.

if your looking to sell or trade pieces then my goal is to collect them ALL and even at 200 im short quite a few ;)

Very handsome collection! I was also bit by the Timex bug but only about 6 months ago. Since that time my collection of wearable watches has grown significantly. My tastes have narrowed and I have stopped buying them all, lol. Lately I have been focusing more on specific watches to add to my collection, of which, you already have several, including the one button chrono, the tachometer and the bullseye sprite. I currently have more watches in great looking and running order, but are missing straps and bracelets. The problem I have is when it comes to deciding on which straps to get for my watches, other watches that are ready to wear catch my eye and then it ends up on my wrist a few days later, lol. Add to that the fact I need more proper storage for my watches and well, my desk is quite messy with both in service and out of service watches strewn about. There is something about these vintage Timex's. There is a timeless cool factor to many of them. I get compliments on nearly all my watches, which is very encouraging. Great photographs too BTW! Thank you for sharing.:thumbsu:

Thanks. They all have their merits of you look close enough. My goal is to get an example.of each as cheaply as possible then get better parts where required for a select few that I really prize.
On the lust list at the moment are any 76s I don't have, a chapel hand sprite, blue bullseye sprite, robin and wonder woman watches, a working original.marlin (M22), and bezels.for all the dive watches I have lol

Another one here who got bitten about 6 months ago, 'most' of my Timex collection here, all but a few  are electric or electronic, with the 'few' being early quartz models....going to have to get another box!

Would the original Marlin be an early 50's? Not sure I've seen a chapel hand Sprite. Comic book character watches are on my list for sure. I'm also on the hunt for a plastic case military. Good luck on your quest for bezels, they don't age well unfortunately:(

You e got some nice pieces there. The blue striped dynabeat is epic.

I used A4 folios used for jewellery/bracelets they hold 40 in each if you double up and have a box for the cream de la crem

I've one or two electric/dynabeats but not working. I tend to focus on mechanicals

Wow, great collections! I just have the one, that I got some while back. Non-running, the balance wheel has come loose from the balance staff, and with its design I'm not sure how to stake it so I'm just looking for another one instead. It's an M75 so should be fairly easy to pick one up from the bay, I just need to pull my finger out.

And I've found the stem bridge assembly so fiddly! Give me a Japanese chrono to reassemble any day rather than another one of those!

Hi there!

Not yet :( tbh I don't see that dial style that often for sale on eBay... Least not under £100 lol

I had my eye out for either a 200 foot or 600 foot diver and I finally found a 1970 200 foot in my budget within a large Lot of Timex's. I snapped it up and was sorely disappointed when the seller had forgotten to ship it with the lot. Thankfully they sent it out when I pointed it out. Still waiting on a period correct Tropic rubber strap. Looks great though.

I hear they get brittle as they age and don't do well with being popped off and on.

    • Its 4 o'clock in the morning here in the Uk, i cant sleep, i dont sleep, not much ever really. My brain never shuts off to rest, I'm just a constant thinker, i have to be very tired to be able to sleep,  i guess eventually it will be my undoing and my health will suffer because of it I'm sure. But while I'm here i want to get as much out of life as i can, and give as much as i can, to help, maybe to make a difference to someone's life if that is within my capability, recent events have made that need even more clear to me. I'm not sure where I'm going with this or why i bring it up , or if its relevant to want i want to talk about its just in my head right now. What i do want to talk about is something thats been on my mind for ages. I like to be prepared,  I'm not fond of surprises because surprises take control away and i am a bit of a control freak at times. This forum, Our Forum if i can call it that, is here because of two reasons. The guy that created it and keeps it funded and the people that joined it.  Without either, it would not exist, and lets face it one day it won't ( I'm a realist and i talk about things others dont or who are afraid to in other words folk that dont particularly prepare for the inevitable). How many of us visit here regularly ?  How many among us almost depend on the forum as a way of socialising because they are stuck at home and how many of us has it become part of a daily routine to check in and see if they can offer advice or get help with something they are working on or just to have a chat and engage in some banter. The members here are in the thousands and thousands have disappeared over the years many had just a fleeting visit. But there are a good few of us that know each other quite well and visit regularly. I dont know about you but i wouldnt want to lose that communication with you all, in all honesty it has become an important part of that side of my life and helps to feed my passion for all things watches. Some of you may think differently and thats ok, some of may stop and think # what would i do " Without Our Forum " #
    • Naptha appears to be a general name and its content can be varied depending upon what it's specific use is. Lighter fluid as an example can be light or heavier also with other ingredients to help it burn. Try sesrching for benzine ( as opposed to benzene which is linked to causing health issues ) . There are other fluids such as ethanol that you could try and also methylated sprirts, mostly ethanol with a small percentage of methanol added. Experiment with any new chemical to see how quickly schellac dissolves in its presence. I have tried a few things but hexane is not one of them, i understand it does evaporate very quickly.  Be sure sure to check out any safety data on chemicals you try. Toxicity of fumes and flash point information, ultrasonic machines can heat up fluids even without a heater function. And of course always ask here for personal opinions when trying a new substance.
    • I have that set and really like it. I prefer that crystal holder over the one that came with my Bergeon claw tool and any time I use the claw I use this one instead of the Bergeon one, just an additional bonus with this tool.
    • Is the Roamer not a split stem? I'm confused on your how your case is put together. If it is a front loader where is it you are putting the case screws? I love me some Roamer, do you have any photos?
    • Oh nice. I have a similar wedge style stump for my staking tool, so I'll give that a shot. Thanks!
