Hamilton PW RR Grade in Salesman Case

It has finally arrived. A Hamilton 992 in a clear back salesman skeleton case. But when i looked at it closely, the back would not screw don all the way as it was bottoming out on the two movement case screws. Here is the beautiful watch but with the screws removed and the back screwed on tight. Any insight on why these screws interfere with the case back closing. As well, would love some history on the Salesman Cases from Hamilton.

Hmmm.. my suspicion is that they may be the wrong screws, perhaps the heads are too deep, thick or have the wrong profile, or the screws are bottoming out on the holes.

Are there other screws on the watch with the same thread, but a different profile that they may have been swapped with at some stage?

 

If not, they may have been substituted at some stage, when the watch was being repaired.

Alternatively, is the case assembled correctly? Does it show signs of having been repaired?

Funny, I had the exact same issue with my South Bend which is also in a Salesman's case. One screw had been replaced, and when you tightened the cover all the way, the screw head, which was slightly domed, would cause the crystal to pop out. Took a bit of close up investigation to discover what the issue was. GORGEOUS Hamilton btw!

The Salesman Case is actually from 2019 Classic Watch Case company and not a vintage case, however, no problem because it will be durable and I plan on keeping this for a very long time. I removed the case screws and the back now fits. I may just shave them down or modify the case in my lathe to accommodate the area needed for the screws. Open the crystal on your case and you will see “CWC Co “ on the top and a serial number on the bottom. Your case is also a remake of a vintage case I would bet. This company has one currently on sale for $180, so not cheap.

Message from the vendor:


Yes, for some movement, the back does not screw completely. This is one of the shortcoming of the case.

The stainless steel are going to be collectible soon. We only produced 400 of them. Once sold out, we will not produce anymore.

You may fit other movement that does not have screw pop out and it can close better.

Next version is the Gold Plated and Silver Plated and we may also produce limited quantity of 200 in rose gold

Again, we only produce all our cases in 1 run and retire them and do not produce them anymore.

Our Milan, wrist watch cases are all sold out. We will no longer produce the silver color of Milan. We will be producing 500 more of the Milan Gold color.

So, these cases, once sold out, they will be more valuable as there are only limited quantity.

So I tightened the case screws and marked the Case-back with a marker, out it on and saw where it touched the screws. Then I filed that part off and now the case back fits nicely.

Geez! Those cases cost more than double what my entire watch cost! You were spot on @jdrichard, my case is one of those.
