My first Marlin

Picked this '76 Timex Marlin up today for $5.00. It was missing the crown and stem so I borrowed one from the Mercury, wound it up, and it's been keeping perfect time since. I'm really liking these M24 movements. I may even attempt to replace the crystal... now I just have to find a crown and stem.

You can try repairing the crystal yourself. Walmart sells a headlight restoration kit that comes with everything you need to restore a plastic watch crystal. I've used it and it works amazing. The kit is made by Rustoleum, so there may be other places to purchase this.

Thanks for the suggestion. I liked that '77 Marlin you cleaned up, it looks great. Mind if I ask how you removed the gold tone on the bezel?

I like it. Very 1970s, and I particularly like the layout of the black dial.

 that is not a Marlin, rather it is a Mercury.    What is the dial code at the base of the dial and I'll check for the missing stem crown.

On the '77 it was silver tone from the factory. Removing gold coloring isn't easy on any material without ruining it.

The dial code is 2606802476. I was under the impression that codes beginning with 2 were Marlins and codes beginning with 1 were Mercuries, though that's just from random internet claims.

Sprites begin with 2 as well so the one single digit is not enough to determine the model.  Best is to have a catalog from the year in question.   Of course those are not easy to come by but, I do have a collection of them. Anyway, one key feature of a Marlin made from 1963 to say 1983 or so is the Water Proof \ Water Resistant or wave logo on the dial.  Of course Sprites have this as well and so do the 21 Jewels.  But no Mercury will have that on the dial. A Mercury will also not have that on the case back either whereas the others will. 

I will check for the part latter today.

Looks like I need to change the title to "My second Mercury or maybe Sprite". Oh well, I'll find a Marlin one day!

can't find the dial code in any of the reference guides I have.  These books are limited to US sold models so the only way to go is to physical match up.  Show me a pic of the back of the case.

Thanks for checking. Inside reads, "Case, Great Britain, Timex". The stem crown from the '67 Mercury fits this watch but if this black dial is not a Marlin then I'll probably set it aside for parts and continue the search.

ok, now that is puzzling becasue the case back has water resistant on it.  still not sold on it being a Marlin but this makes it interesting

Although I don't see that model number it looks like all the models starting with 26 are marlins. The case back didn't help because the catalog says both marlins and sprites are water resistant.

It seems possible that someone replaced the original case back with the water resistant one. Do you think this might be a Marlin? 2024-2467 dot dash?
